Anactoria would have been very difficult, since she was one of Sappho’s lovers, mentioned in one of her poems. And to those of you who don’t know Sappho: She was the most famous and influential female poet in ancient Greece. She is known for her passionate lesbian poems – in fact, the word "lesbian" was made because she came from the Island Lesvos.

The goddess is of course Aphrodite. And the poem sounds much better in Greek. Manos Hatzidakis put music to it, and you can find it on the fabulous album Ο Μεγάλος Ερωτικός (Magnus Eroticus).

Tricky question. Homer is definitely no. I think Plato refers to her, but I’m not sure. She was very well known in ancient Greece. And she’s not a character in a tragedy.


I checked a little – it’s a bit unclear if Plato referred to her, but he probably did. It’s also said that he called her "wise".
