i hear what you're saying. however, i'm the opposite. i kind of loose attention in the middle of all the fast time change stuff. it's when they get back to melody or memoable riffs, that i enjoy them. if anything, they could practice a bit of restraint. count of tuscany is a good example. the intro had 4 awesome parts. then comes the singing which loses me, until the chorus. then i'm lost again with all the time changy stuff. but, when petrucci does is floyd type solo, i'm all ears. then that last acoustic part is awesome! i guess, its about sitting through to get the good stuff :) |
Dude, that's why I think Dream Theater is the best band out there - I mean, they change things up a bit every album, and different people like them for different reasons! I personally think Train of Thought is their weakest album because they were trying to make a metal album, but some people got into them because of that album!

Haha, you got me there, I am DEFINITELY a fanboy. But you know what? I'm a fanboy of a lot of bands! And Dream Theater is simply the best! If you're gonna be a fanboy, be a fanboy of the best. And even as a fanboy, I can admit there are weaknesses in some of their latest albums (not A Dramatic Turn of Events though, that album is amazing). But I take them as they are. I mean, take Systematic Chaos as an example - we were talking about it above, and yes, overall I admit that is a weak album. But you know what, it's still better than 99.99999 % of albums that are available to the public because of In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 and 2.

Yes, we all know your feelings - how you think DT paints with one color on their palette. You never replied to the youtube videos I posted, by the way - explain to me how that's a band with one color on their palette? Why are you here in this thread?  This is the Dream Theater APPRECIATION thread, not the "let's talk about how I personally don't think they're worthy compared to this band and that band and..." thread.

Hey, I understand where you're coming from, man. I'm sorry they haven't kept your attention. To me, they won me over before that, and because I was won over I stuck it out with them, and was able to take each album as it is and say "well, I absolutely LOVE these tracks, and even though I don't appreciate the other tracks on this album, just the fact that I LOVE these other tracks makes it a better album than a LOT of other ones in my collection." I'm the same way with a lot of bands - take Rush for example. I have all their albums, but I wish they were making albums like in the days of Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Hemispheres, etc. But even though each album hasn't lived up to those, they still have plenty of tracks on each album they've made since that I love, so...yep, fanboy here. But you know what, it's more fun to be a fanboy than dissatisfied all the time.

Loved them when I discovered them with Images and Words at the time it came out, it was a revolution and derserved all the hype. Never fancied much When Dream and Day Unite even if it contained the seeds of what it was to come.
Then I loved Awake and A Change of Seasons, much less Falling Into Infinity, and with Metropolis Pt 2 they became again on my top and that stayed with Six Degrees.

It is not, though it is in the appreciation section. It is really about Portnoy's departure from the band and its impact on them, at least based on what I can make out from the OP. There was a separate DT appreciation thread, and it's probably still active.

Agreed with JJ, to me, they are only ok. I've said it before - i can only listen to them rarely and in small dosages.
I prefer Riverside, Isis, Mastodon, Ancestors, Alcest, and Russian Circles. Those are my favorite Metal acts right now.

DT is like a revolving door for me. My favorites will always be: Train of Thought, Awake, Six Degrees. Those are, IMO, their solid albums. My least favorites will always be: Falling to Infinity and Black Clouds. Those are just not very good The rest all rise and fall, or are mixed bags. Add that all up: Overall, DT is OK IMO

.....you're new here? DT is pretty much god of PA, I'd say over half for sure. To some they may be Satan but they just yell the loudest...there's plenty like me who think DT is OK overall.

oh i love it to death. it was the first time in a long while that i totally devoured an album. i just played the sh*t out of it. i'm not sick of it either. i love all the tracks, but favorites are backs of angels, lost not forgotten, this is the life. when i saw them last fall, they opened with Bridge across the sky. awesome opener with the chants and stuff. then myong comes out and finds his spot, then petrucci comes out waving, making eye contact with us, and give the thumbs up. oh, it was so great. i wish they were coming around my way on that KC-DT thing. oh well.
