Tarkus Side Two is just disjointed and unfocused compared to Side One. ELP fans certainly don't loathe it otherwise they wouldn't be fans , its just that Side One gets a little bit overpraised by comparison.Smile
Ya, The Who By Numbers has some great songs, "Slip Kid", "How Many Friends", "Success Story"...

I bought the Welcome Back My Friends... live set before I bought Tarkus so the studio version always feels too slow and tame for me...

agreed. plus the extended live version of Aquatarkus makes the studio version redundant.

The live version of Aquatarkus just wipes the floor with the studio version in terms of excitement and virtuoso playing from all 3.  I think it includes some of Greg Lake's finest moments as a bass player.  He really holds down the bottom so Emo can Moog-out but also throws in some great scale-based riffs for variety.  As for Emo, the multiple Moog sounds/timbres he was able to conjure were revolutionary, and CP creates that great tom-tom driven freight train that keeps the song pounding in high gear.  Wish I could've seen it live Wink

yeah me too. ELP were never more 'crucial' than when they played Aquatarkus live. I think also that piece introduced me to electronic music and encouraged me to explore Tangerine Dream and the like.

Black Moon is generally a very respected album. Most ELP fans objection to that album stem from Mark Mancina's 'overproduction' and they have a point. Great songs though and would have made a decent swansong if they hadn't gone on and made In The Toilet Seat.

Tarkus Side Two is just disjointed and unfocused compared to Side One. ELP fans certainly don't loathe it otherwise they wouldn't be fans , its just that Side One gets a little bit overpraised by comparison.Smile

I really like Cured by Steve Hackett.
I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

Oh just remembered, I actually think Pure Reason Revolution's second outing Amor Vincit Omnia is their best record......by far.
I know people prefer the overt Floyd tendencies of the first, but get past the poppy side of the album, and you'll find an incredible modern album that succeeds in mixing pop with electronic and psych. I love it.

Jon Anderson is my favorite lyricist though I don't have a clue what he's singing about. (To my mind, vocals are simply another thread contributing melody and rhythm to the overall tapestry of a song.)

Novella is my favorite Renaissance album and my 2nd favorite album, any genre, of all-time.

I, so-called 'BrufordFreak,' am not really a fan of drums! (That is, I really enjoy music in which the standard rock drum kit is absent.) (To me, Bill Bruford's drum/percussion playing is like Van Gogh's palette of yellows.)

I really like a lot of the music that came out of the 80s! (E.g., David Sylvian, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, Everything But The Girl, Aztec Camera, Love and Money, The Fixx, Simply Red, Zang Tum Tum [records], and The Cure.

I really love so-called 'minimalist' music!

I really love the neo-YES music of Magenta, Moth Vellum and Wobbler.

What a fun thread!

1) I love Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut".
2) My favorite Tull album is "A Passion Play".
3) My favorite Yes member solo album is Steve Howe's "Beginnings" and I love Steve Howe's vocals.
4) I can't stand Tony Levin's bass playing.
5) I think "Discipline" is one of the worst King Crimson albums ever.

Wow!

My favourite Dream Theater Album is WDADU, it is actually one of my favourite Prog Albums of all time. And my all time favourite Rush Album is A Show of Hands, as it sums up so perfectly the best Rush era.
Like some one else mentioned here, I also don't really like JT's Aqualung, it is probably my least favourite Tull album. As a big Spock's Beard fan I also have to admit that Snow is to me the most boring and irritating Beard album.

'Pinnacles' - very good album indeed, but hats off for the 'tron drenched 'Macula Transfer'.  'Stuntman' is quite under-appreciated - with titles like 'Drunken Mozart In The Desert' or 'Detroit Snackbar Dreamer', perhaps 'Scarlet Score For Mescalaro' - it's gotta be good, right ??

Froese's CHILDREN OF A DEEPER STUDY of the AGES album is really amazing too. It sounds like something that came within the 1980's synth sound movement, but really the album is from 1977. :)
