I think it was when I subscribed to Rhapsody and had exhausted the meager fare of the prog that they bothered to include that I knew about (for example, at first no Beard prior to Snow--and then not even Snow, a single KC album in the Belew era...although at times, ample Porcupine Tree extending all the way back to the psuedo-psychedelic/trip stuff done under the same name), I started... (let's all say it together) googling about the bands that were listed as prog. 

Either that or I might have seen it as an external link on a wikipedia page about prog--maybe Camel...Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

Went through a period as quite a big metal fan (European, melodic power metal mostly) in my early-to-mid teens. Drifted towards progressive metal and loved many hard rock and rock bands that, when googled, directed me towards this...erm..."progressive" colour scheme on a site called Progarchives (more specifically prog-related and proto-prog). Discovered a Kansas compilation and a Rush compilation in my dad's CD collection around the same time. Got really curious, started exploring the database/lurking the forums and eventually joined up asking for recommendations.  Remember trying out this band called Genesis only to find it extremely boring.

Hardly a tale of heroics and daring exploration, but with the Internet...what can you expect?

I awoke one night in 1997 to several entities beside my bed who told me some day there would be a worldwide community of prog lovers who will commune with each other daily and spend many gleeful hours cataloging obscure bands no one cares about.   I chuckled, rolled over and went back to sleep.   Who knew.

I went looking for progressive rock sites a few years back and just found it via routine searching.
Before that I wasn't really into reading about prog online and really learned about the more obscure bands from 2  friends and using  various books about prog.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.
