The 1973 version is the best for me, this concert also has my favourite versions of TSRTS, Rain Song and No Quarter - a great band at their peak and touring their best album.

And yes, for me that's the studio version.
I know, what I said earlier, should correct it. I mean, I can't stand my friends playing the intro with the guitar all the time, but after all this is the case where the best version is also my favorite.

Yes, I can barely listen to the song, but I can fairly admit that that version is the best, in my opinion.

I'm surprised to see the studio version leading by such a large margin, especially when most of the reviews of the album mention how overplaying/overhearing this song have made them (the reviewers) feel very little for it. Myself I'm not the typical music fan, in my "ideology" the recording is only a small part in the life cicle of a piece of music. I usually prefer live albums and I'm an avid concert goer. This fits well with my love for the Zepp, such a prototypical live band. For me, most of their material sounds better live. Speaking of the Rain Song, how about The Song Remains The Same (the song)? The combo on TSRTS (the album) is mindblowing. Speaking of No Quarter, the live version from the 1975 Earl's Court concert is one of the most amazing piece of prog performances I've ever heard, up there with Echoes from Live In Pompeii or Solar Music Live. Too bad it wasn't published on the recent DVD (which features a good chunk of that particular concert).

Seconded  . Another song that really got a kick from being played live was "No Quarter" - the studio version is good, but not as amazing as the live ones. "Stairway", on the other hand, does not really gain a whole lot in any of the live versions I've heard. Just my opinion, of course.

Different isn't necessarily better, though I can see why it's interesting. But then I have the same feelings over the Wall. Everyone thinks the live Wall is so much better than the studio version, I totally disagree. To each his/her own!

Actually the studio version is the least interesting one for me right now. The live versions all add so much more to it! Even the 1975 version, which is IMO inferiour to the studio version, is more interesting for me because it's different  The 1971 live version has a lovely brevity which I appreciate a lot, and I can't think of something special to say about the 1972 version (other that it's a part of an otherwise absolutely impeccable album). My vote goes to the 1973 version, because it's richest musically, with its potential explored more than anywhere else, because Robert's voice is more than perfect (despite the fact that for most of the rest of the concert an annoying hoarseness spoils his vocals for me), and because it contains my favourite rock guitar solo of all time. Actually, I find this performance the top moment of rock culture ever.

Is it not possible to create polls in the Prog Related section? I wanted to start this there, but there isn't a "New Poll" section. Anyway, this poll is about a prog song  This is a chronology of all the official releases of Stairway to Heaven made by Led Zeppelin (no covers allowed), inspired by Pekka's "Comfortably Numb" poll. Pick your favourite! PS I'm not aware of any other official release, but if there is one, please correct me!
