That's where I disagree. They don't show their chops by shredding for 10 minutes, or creating 30-minute epics. Think about BE. That's one of the most ambitious things ever done by a prog metal band! If you think about Dream Theater or Symphony X, all of their albums have a similar style, and they don't take as many chances (I still love DT to death though). While I won't say PoS is as original as Opeth or Athiest, I think they definitely are not your standard prog metal band by any stretch of the imagination IMO.

I agree with Pocupine Tree or Riverside, but Pain of Salvation is one of the most original and innovative prog metal bands ever. In a sea of modern prog bands trying to sound like they're from the 70's, or cloning Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation is not like any of these bands. They have their own blend of melodic progressive rock, metal, gothic-influenced sections, and an excellent vocalist to top it all off. -Jeff

Besides the opinion that they aren't really original. ![Tongue Tongue](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif)
Anyways, for my list:
1. The Mars Volta
2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor
3. Atheist
4. Tool
5. Behold... The Arctopus
6. Cynic
7. The Locust (not prog here, but hot damn!)
8. Sigur Ros
9. Devin Townshend
10. Wolves in the Throne Room
It pains me not to include Meshuggah, but as someone pointed out they were already around in the 80s.

1. Maudlin Of The Well - Its rare that you come across bands with such range and capabilities such as motW.
2. Porcupine Tree - Blended a lot of music into each of their albums, and always suprise me with what they bring out next (even in small parts with the latest offering)
3. Opeth - Blend many genres together seemlessly, and they do this in a way which seems natural, fluid and listenable.

Just so you know just because they are original and unique doesn't make them good, the only good and unique band I can think of at the moment is Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Lift Yours Fists Like Antennas to Heaven just hits the right button with me

^ If you like Tortoise and Ulver, you definitely need to try Eivind Aarset, he's just been added to Fusion.

I just hope people don't just list bands that they like here. That's not the intention of this thread.
As for me:
1. Dream Theater (Images & Words was groundbreaking) 2. The Mars Volta (I actually can't stand them, but they are very unique) 3. Athiest (The first tech/death/jazz metal combo) 4. Death (constantly pushed the boundaries of metal) 5. Pain of Salvation (the most original straightforward prog metal band!) 6. Opeth (one of the most innovative prog metal bands in existence!)
|
I hope so as well. Thanks for the list.

Well, that's what I did with TMV in my list. I enjoy those 'honorable mentions' all a lot more than I enjoy TMV, but I included them in the list anyway because I cannot deny the impact they have had on the modern Prog world.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.
