Indeed. I went through what E Dub seems to be going through right now with metal. I discovered all the classics too soon and ran some genres like death metal and thrash metal to the ground and at some stage lost interest in discovering more artists. It's not like I began to dislike the genres as such, but just that I was already spoilt for choice for masterpieces whenever I felt in the mood for either. I keep my antennae open for any real gems but I am wary and choose carefully, because the average metal fan is more easily satisfied than I am and what may be f***ing awesome for him may well be, God forbid, f***ing awful for me. ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) So when I got interested in prog again, I consciously decided to mix it up with jazz, fusion jazz, blues, hard rock, even some good pop - not because I get bored of prog but because I don't want to exhaust good bands too soon. And once you take that approach, you find yourself enjoying music from all sorts of genres just as much prog or metal, the idea that one needs to listen to a specific genre to enjoy himself is fundamentally flawed.

I started a last.fm profile a few months ago, and recently DT and Tool have been battling out for the number one spot on my list. Now Tool is by far my favorite band ever, but I have far more DT material and I haven't listened to my latest purchases of them as much. So I've been intentionally playing Tool more so it would appear that to me they're far better. However, I've listened to tons of Tool before, so I know what all the songs sound like, there are considerably fewer surprises in the music, and the only things I still haven't gotten used to are the polyrhythms in "Rosetta Stoned". So a couple weeks ago, I really got sick of Tool. Then I realized it doesn't really matter.
After a couple of weeks of not listening to them constantly, I can still say I love them. They're awesome.
Moral: Listen to whatever. Set up a Britney Spears station on pandora radio and get out your pink scarves and high heels and unleash your inner female. ![Big smile Big smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

I can't get tired of prog cuz to me it's not a genre, but an approach to making/listening to music. Genre-wise, tho, I do switch it quite a bit. Primus to GG to Cynic to Beefheart to Beardfish to Neal Morse to Mahavishnu Orchestra. So I never get tired of one particular type of progressive music. The progressive mindset, however, I'd have to be a different person than I am to get tired of that. I will always hold orginality and creativity to be the defining characteristics of good music. Just my two cents.

![Smile Smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif) Do not worry. Try listening to anything but prog for a week or two and sure enough you will hear a prog tune, hear an interview ,read an article or see an album cover and you will be back. I am always swapping it around. I don't know what I am going to play next myself

Not exacly what you asked, but today at work I listened to the whole How the West was Won by Led Zeppelin. WOW!!! I really re-fall in love with it and Led Zeppelin in general, which I honestly haven´t paid that much attention in the last three years... good to be back!

Of course this happens to me very frequently ... at the moment I am really interested in alternative rock and psych, the classic progressive rock is nothing that I would like to hear right now.

Yeah I go through bouts of not listening to 'prog'? Does it matter? No one goddamn bit. No one has an obligation to 'stay troo 2 teh porgz'. It's just music at the end of the day.

Once in awhile I won't listen to any prog for a day or two, but usually just because there's other music in my collection that I feel like listening to. I usually rotate what I'm going to listen to everyday depending on my mood and what appeals to me at the moment.

I felt that way for a little while, but then I started listening to jazz instead of boring rock.

We all go through cycles, depending on our personal circumstances. Up until my kids were born, I had some sort of music playing constantly. Once I had kids to deal with, well surely there were weeks where I never listened to a song much less an album. Now the kids are away, so I have a bit more time to enjoy. However I still find myself going back to the old favorites (call it senescence setting in if you like) more often than exploring the new. But then I suppose the Top Rated on the site are there for a reason, which is that they have almost unlimited potential to continue to entertain, as well as provide nooks and crannies for new discoveries with each listen.

For the first time in a LONG time, I have hardly any interest in listening to progressive music. I've dusted off CD's housed in another section of my cabinet and become reacquainted with them. I normally listen to progressive music at work, but haven't even come close to dialing them up on iTunes. I even spent 3 hours listening to Rush...but not the band. ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Anybody else going through bouts of just not wanting to listen to progressive music?

Blasphemer! ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)
For me there is a broad umbrella covering progressive music which makes that impossible. Also, I have a rotation scheme for listening to my collection that ensures everything gets listened to sooner or later independent of what I interested in at the moment or even if it's prog or not.
How long is your LONG time anyway, if I may ask?

Talking about progressive music will help. I have to admit to talking a lot with a buddy of mine about music he and I grew up with. Bands like Kansas and Rush are a part of that, but that was before I was aware of this genre. To my prepubescent ears, it was just music. Plain and simple. I'm enjoying going back and re-discovering albums that I literally haven't heard in 25 years. Today, for example, when I spun Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down after receiving it from SwapaCD (Excellent site, if anyone's interested). It was like I was hearing it again for the first time. A band that I loved as a kid, but have gotten away from is Iron Maiden. I bought Somewhere In Time and that was cool to become reacquainted a particular 'sound' that made such an impact on me at a very influential time in my life. Earlier in the week I spun ' Til Tuesday, Mr. Mister, Toto and Jackson Browne and it was such a breath of fresh air. I'll still spin my prog; but, I will begin looking at a very neglected section of my CD shelves from now on. E

I'm always listening to new albums, so I can't say that I do get bored of it. But I also listen to things outside of prog a lot, so whatever. There are definitely times when I'm not in the mood though.

As I wrote in an earlier post, I spent YEARS without buying CDs, or basically listening to any music. I bought my first CD player at the end of 1997, when I was living in Finland, and from that point I started buying records again. This is how I became a PA member in the summer of 2005.... My interest in music, especially in progressive rock, had been rekindled. Little did I know that simple act of registering for the site would change my life ...

I don't listen to music because it's *prog*, but rather because I *enjoy* it. I just happen to enjoy progressive rock more than the average music fan, and therefore it takes up a nice chunk of space in my cd collection.
I happen to have "Hittin" The Note" by the Allman Brothers Band playin' on the house stereo at the moment, and I don't feel the least bit guilty ![Wink Wink](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif)

Don't worry man , that sort of situations happen. There was a weekend in which I didn't play Brain Salad Surgery , so I can understand how you feel. It's better to listen to different stuff like Trilogy or Tarkus for a change.
