Finally I've gone with Opeth. The reason? Opeth is hard to better at what they do. Great flow, tons of melody, really impressive playing all round with a keen sense for balance, each song having a distinctive character. And they're well capable of tearing it up.
Can are loads of fun as well, they're your mindscrew party music. Again, impressive playing, each song has a distinctive character etc. etc. Fun to dance around to and sing along with Mooney or Suzuki. Only the mindscrew part is relatively lightweight. Even the likes of' 'Aumgn' or 'Peking O', impressive as they are, are more funny than anything else. Can are a good soundtrack for the silly, whimsical moments; to get your brain fried look elsewhere.

I'm stumped.
Hmm, let's try comparing the bands' worst- which of the two tracks is more overrated, "Halleluwah" or "The Moor"?
I'm still stumped.

Comparing Can and Opeth is not even apples and football anymore. Though it's strange, this is not very hard for me: Opeth, it's clear. I got to know Can and listened to some of their music, but only Monster Movie fits my taste a bit, while the others' music does nothing for me. Opeth has overall quality to my ears, and one of my favourite all-time albums (Blackwater Park).
Though I voted for Opeth, I think Can might be the more "important" band of those, maybe deserve it more (as Area did but Marillion), yet I am asked for my taste, so..

Can Can win? Not to kick the Opeth, but voting Can because I can. Opeth is very good at what they do, but I much prefer Can. I'm not keen on growling, to say the least. Vocals aside, I also find Can musically more interesting.

This one's tricky.. favourite prog metal band or favourite krautrock band... AHH.
I'll give the edge to CAN for influence and innovation.

My God, the Cookiemonster remark really made my day! Neither of the bands has got a special place in my heart but I sure do like Vitamin C, so Can gets my vote on this round.

Neither band is going to make my top 500 bands list but I like Damnation, and Watershed was mostly cookie-monster free so that one if pretty good too.
