IMO Anglagard is the best band since early Genesis but can hardly be considered modern, they are from the early 90's.
But being in the list I'll vote for them.

I wanted to say Pain of Salvation too... but their new album is a disaster!
Best from this list: The Mars Volta, Riverside, Porcupine Tree
Worst from this list: Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Transatlantic

It's sad, isn't it? You look for one and another, and they all sound the same. So why is modern music so poor? It allk sound so, how does one put it, digital(ized), you know? NO real sounds, it's like a midi track! Nevertheless, my vote goes to The Flower Kings even though they are Swedish ! That would be becouse of the way they copy King Crimson sounds . Ok, but i think that nowadays it's enough if you are a player with a certain degree of virtuosity, but come on, listen to Pink Floyd for example. The guys can't play... but the can make music that I can tell You!!! Yeah

To an large extent, I agree... although i dislike the vast majority of neoprog, some of it is okay.

Why so many votes for GBYE? They're good, but I'd hardly consider
them mind-blowing prog... very good post-rock, though.
I think The Mars Volta are AMAZING, but I need to hear more output from
them before I give them the nod. Deloused didn't catch my
attention the first time around, and only because of the brillinace
that is Frances The Mute am I listening to it again and admittedly
enjoying it much more, though I wouldn't call it 'perfect'.
On the other hand, The Flower Kings have consistantly made me love
them. Some albums I'd give a 4 rather than a 5, but there's more
"perfect" moments with them than any other band. Many might
disagree, but I LOVE how Unfold The Future was so improvisational and
jammy... it's those extra, drawn-out moments that took it from
good to great.

GYBE, I mean, they're too melancholic to be called experimental. They express feelings that conemporary instrumental/experimental music can't.
Mars Volta are almost as god, but I spent $60 to get "Lift Your Skinny Fists..." from the US, so you coluyd say i sufferded enough for them to be called a huge fan
