Well....I don't know THAT many prog artists so I'll try to make do with the ones that I've heard.
Symphonic: Foxtrot - Genesis Close to the Edge - Yes Tales from Topographic Oceans - Yes A Song for All Seasons - Renaissance Going for the One - Yes Selling England by the Pound - Genesis Neo-Prog: A Trick of the Tail - Genesis Misplaced Childhood - Marillion (not a fan of Fish, but I've heard selections from this album so I know it's one of the key Neo-Progressive Rock albums) Script for a Jester's Tear - Marillion Psychedelic\Space Rock: The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd A Saucerful of Secrets - Pink Floyd The Wall - Pink Floyd Side note: Pink Floyd's all I know here. Prog Folk: Aqualung - Jehtro Tull Songs from the Wood - Jethro Tull Trespass - Genesis (wouldn't this be progressive folk? Except for "The Knife", which would be like heavy prog I guess, the album sure sounds like it's prog folk) Electronic Prog: The Man-Machine - Kraftwerk Electric Cafe - Kraftwerk Autobahn - Kraftwerk Rubycon - Tangerine Dream Phaedra - Tangerine Dream Zeit - Tangerine Dream Eclectic Prog: In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson Larks' Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson Prog Metal: Scenes from a Memory Metropolis Part II - Dream Theater There. That's all I can muster. Edited by Teh_Slippermenz - October 28 2007 at 03:07 |

okay, now for the motherload...even though micky's pretty much covered ALL of it Rock Progressivo Italiano!!
first let me say that this is such a broad category that I've gone well over 10, and could have very well kept going, but that would be losing the objective here. So here we are, as concise as I could be while covering all bases and roughly in order for newcomers...
PFM - Storia di un Minuto
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Io Sono Nato Libero
Area - Arbeit Macht Frei
Le Orme - Felona e Sorona
RDM - Contaminazione (or substitute New Trolls and you've got "ba-rock" covered)
Celeste - s/t (this one here's my fave RPI album...just gorgeous)
Il Biglietto per L'Inferno - s/t
Alphataurus - s/t
Jacula - Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus
La Locanda delle Fate - Forse le Lucciole Non si Amon Piu
at this point, you would want to make sure you have all of the big boys covered...ie. all of PFM, Area, Le Orme and Banco's albums, then proceed...
Metamorphosi - Inferno
Arti e Mestieri - Tilt
Quella Vecchia Locanda - s/t
Alan Sorrenti - Aria
Il Volo - Essere o Non Essere?
Riccardo Zappa - Celestion
I Giganti - Terra in Bocca
Osanna - L'Uomo
Ibis - Sun Supreme
RRR - Per...un Mondo di Cristallo
Buon Vecchio Charlie - s/t
Rustichelli & Bordini - Opera Prima
Delirium - Dolce Acgua
there's so many styles in RPI that it takes many albums to cover, and in this case there are still tons I left out.

@ cynthiasmallet - interesting idea, helps see the diversity of one band/musician.
@ Micky - I'll look forward to it (especially your guide to RPI...).
I'll also prepare mine later.
Feel free to do which genre you like.
I am very interested to read all your thoughts about this, so please share.

This is the case:
You are asked by someone who is new to prog, to exlpain to him what's it about and what best way to do it than let the person listen to it himself.
He has asked you to give a list of key albums for each genre and that list needs to be as short as possible, but needs to include the most defining albums and also, to the extent possible, the various styles of this genre, so that he doesn't just hear the same style in several albums.
Here's your challenge - compile a list for which genre you want represented here in PA that has:
- key/influential albums
- albums that represent as many possible styles within this genre
I give no limit of number of albums per list, but try to be as short and succint. If you can make it a 10 album list, then great; if not, no problem.
Remember, those are not necessarily your favourite albums, but albums you think represent best the sound of that particular genre, or a style within that genre.
I'll give mine later on.
Let the lists begin...
