^ Sounds interesting Dick. I was lucky enough to see Gary Husband playing in a small intimate venue with Alan Holdsworth some years back. A real pleasure to watch the man play.

Holdsworth/Level 42's drummer demionstrating that he's also a mighty good pianist, with a fairly straight ahead jazz album with a few jazz fusion tracks included. Billy Cobham provides some very subtle drumming on a number of tracks, whilst Level 42's Mark King is almost unrecognisable singing one Antonia Joachim song. The album, I believe, that sits between Husband's Holdsworth and McLaughlin projects.

Just listening to this Bojan Z Trio album at the moment. Excellent explosive Acoustic Jazz with a line up of Piano, Bass and Drums.

Surprised I've not mention Paul Hanson here previously, but being away a couple of weeks from active participation hasn't helped.  Unusually Hanson plays jazz fusion on a bassoon on his forthcoming album Frolic In The land Of Plenty - the instrument sounds like a farting sopranio sax at times but is pretty consistently impressive throughout (also there is one solo, where I could sworn Mike Ratledge was playing frantic keys in the style of early Soft Machine - but it turned out to be the basson with effects). Some reviewers have conjured up the statement "the bassoon's Jaco Pastorius", which is sort of understandable because of the first tune on the album Flight of The Fly echoing Jaco's Continuum.

I simply adore Bobo Stenson's SERENITY. Virtuoso jazz piano, bass and drums on ECM - what more do you need? It's quite different in spirit from Tord Gustavsen's trio, or from Keith Jarrett's (both of which I also enjoy): less melancholic than the former and less flashy than the latter. Still, it seems Stenson has poured a lifetime of experience into this gorgeous double CD. The range of moods is simply astonishing, the interplay between the three musicians magical. I doff my cap.

and yes, i think Weather Report's Tale Spinnin' is superb stuff.........accessible yet experimental.
 
i watched  the Live In Montreux dvd with the Black Mkt / Heavy Weather lineup and it was seriously kickass intense stuff!!! quite close to Supersilent's 7 dvd!!!  and to think such music could be played to such a large crowd back then hehehe

errm not sure there're 2 guitarists listed Bruce Brucato and George Puleo..........Gamalon is listed on PA in the JRF section ehehe i didn't know that until after i bought the album off ebay.  It's the first album from 1987........some members were from prog bands in the 70s.
 
But if yr talkin guitar solos yes this one has 'em!!!

I find the Dixies drift in and out of the territory of jazz rock fusion I like, and instead prefer the Steve Morse Band especially the first 3 albums. Just got the recently released John McLaughlin Essential Recordings album - and the choice of recordings IMHO is  very good, and a definite recommendation as a sampler before moving into serious McLaughlin listening. Almost inevitably the safe Weather Report fans will go for the Jaco period (which has been played out for me) and instead I go for the Alphonso Johnson period, immediately before. Tales Spinnin' is a favourite.
