Guilty Pleasure Bands

Guilty pleasures...

...for me its mostly underground hip-hop. I love artists like Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Jurassic 5, DJ Format, DJ Shadow, Greyskul, Eyedea & Abilities, Blueprint, etc...

This always gets sighs and sad head shakes from my prog friends, as they tell me I'm a white man in my 30's...but ya like what ya like.

Oh, and I will admit that I dig the hell out of  "Rock Your Body" by Justin Timberlake, that's a great groove.

And I love late 70's early 80's pop rock for nostalgic reasons...stuff like Little River Band, Toto, Boz Scaggs, REO Speedwagon, etc...always gets me singing along, then looking around to make sure no one saw me ;)

EDIT: Oh, and as a reformed Deadhead, I usually make fun of hippies for living in the past...then I lock the door and secretly jam to 30 minutes of Dark Star when no one is looking...

This is a great topic, I enjoyed it very much.  

Hmm,  guilty pleasures.. I don't really have many.  In fact right now my ipod is filled with only prog,  but it used to be very different.  I used to have linkin park. 

Let me expound on linkin park a little.  I think that, in comparison to some other mainstream music, is ... don't hurt me..  decent.  I like what they do with their keyboards,I also like that they use keyboards,  which isn't typical with most alt rock, rap rock, mainstream bands. Also the lead singers voice, while alot of times is annoying, sometimes fits the music very well.  But this is really only applicable with Hybrid Theory and Meteora, I haven't heard the other ones, including their new one.

Here are some more of my "guilty pleasures,"  I promise I won't expound quite as much.

-Yellowcard gets some props for using a violin.

-The Fray.   I bet the rest of their music is sucky, but I like "How to Save a Life." I'm a huge fan of Scrubs, and they play that song almost every episode.. But, it's always applicable and fits in nicely.   So I guess I like it more as background music.  They also get props for using a Piano.

-Abba is just plain catchy.

-Eminem.  Yeah, that one probably shocked you.  But I can find myself enjoying his dark, angry lyrics if I'm in the mood. And his "rapping" isn't to the degree of annoying, also it doesn't really have the annoying "beats" or whatever that gives me a headache.  Most of his songs, however,  I could never listen to, let alone enjoy, due to his(sometimes) childish lyrics.

-U2,  mainly for Bono's voice. I really like it.

-Matchbox 20,  just one song.. Can't think of the name right now,  but it's just really easy to listen to.

You might want to get your hands on a cover version of Hey Ya done by the Supersuckers. I think it may just have been originally released as a fan club EP, on which they tend to do covers of their favorites tunes. But it certainly is worth the search.

I guess my guilty pleasure is...... Dream Theater!

yes Pooh died on the table at the RPI regional hospital earlier this year....  terminated when an admin swooped in and pulled the plug..

My favourite guilty pleasure band is Sepultura.

I especially like their albums Arise, Chaos A.D. and Beneath The Remains. Strangely enough I didn't like Arise at all at first (that was in the early 90's). In those days Sepultura was often being accused of being a Slayer rip off. Funny, because in those days I already had a liking for Slayer.
But after some time I finally got into their kind of music. What I especially do like about Sepultura is their use of eerie intros (adding an extra dimension to the atmosphere of the songs), their trademark stoccato killer guitar riffs (by both lead guitarists Max and Andreas) and the variation between thrashy and slow passages and a distorted and a clean guitar sounds in a single song.

Geto Boys for me.  Pretty violent lyrics but they are writing about life where they came from, Houston's 5th ward.  Also like a little Public Enemy every now and then.  A little hardcore stuff once in a while.
