You forgot to mention Lewis Carroll (whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), author of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass and what Alice Found there", who would have celebrated his 175th birthday on the 27th. He and Mozart are the people I am most proud to share birthday with.

1948: Mohandas Gandhi the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, was assasinated in New Daehli by an Hindu fanatic.



1972: In Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 13 unarmed civil rights demonstrators are shot dead by British Army paratroopers in an event that becomes known as "Bloody Sunday." The protesters, all Northern Catholics, were marching in protest of the British policy of internment of suspected Irish nationalists. British authorities had ordered the march banned, and sent troops to confront the demonstrators when it went ahead. The soldiers fired indiscriminately into the crowd of protesters, killing 13 and wounding 17.



1969: Perhaps the most influential musical group of all time, the Beatles make their last public performance on this day in 1969, giving an impromptu concert on the roof of their London recording studio. Neighbors complained about noise, and police broke up the concert.
