I don't mind neo,but besides the basic Pendragon/Pallas/Marillion type of neo bands there are some newer bands in the genre that are extremely good and very underrated.
- Strangefish
- Carptree
- Darwin's Radio
- Frost
- K2
- Ezra Winston
- The Watch
- Splinter
- Saens
- Quidam
- Mindgames

I recommend TWELFTH NIGHT's "Fact and Fiction". It is a seminal neo album (1982) and it's ballsy enough to keep the neophyte's interest, at least for the first few tries. This band really rocks during the rockier sections; yo uwill also find some clear new wave-techno ingredients that show the time of its release. And last, but not least, a splendid closer: the anthem pacifist ballad 'Love Song', moving and well crafted.
In the more pompous side of neo you have CITIZEN CAIN - their first two albums are heavily GENESIS-influenced, the last two find them exploring a different, weirder direction within the boundaries of neo.
Any of these bands is ballsier and more complex than PENDRAGON, ABEL GANZ or PALLAS (not that I hate these bands, really, but I sort of understand why some prog fans don't get into them that easily).
Kind regards.

I think those are the best non-Marillion neo prog albums so far, along with the latest IQ releases. |
If he likes John Mitchell (and I don't know if he does) then I don't see why he wouldn't like these groups, as Mitchell provides guitar for all three.

I think Mitchell is the best possible alternative to Rothery these days. And that means a lot, to me at least. He's an excellent guitarist and composer and I really like his voice too (having not listened to The Urbane before the Kino encounter, I was surprised to hear how good he was).

If you like Fish' era Marillion then you will also (probably) like the first two Arena records: Songs from the Lions Cage and Pride. Especially the first one, with the great epic Solomon, is very worthy of exploring.

Since you said earlier that you like a lot of metal, I think Arena would appeal to you more than the rest because they have a lot of metal leanings (on their most recent three albums that is). Frost has some great metal moments as well.

Well, that's their best album soprobably they're not for you... I'm no neo expert so just wait for Stonie or Cyg, they'll have something to say about this ....there's Cygmund

I bought the Masquerade Overture, but sadly, no dice.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. For some reason I just cannot completely get into neo-prog. It seems odd that I am in love with Marillion and IQ's albums, but I can't find anything else I like. Right now I'm completely infatuated with Marbles, but I started neo-prog with Script For A Jester's Tear and Dark Matter. I love these discs and lots of Marillion and IQ's others. My usual music is PT, post-rock, Symphonic, Italian, and some progressive metal.
Did I start too high, and now everything else will seem mediocre?
Are Marillion and IQ the only good neo-prog bands?
Anyone else struggling with this genre?
