Rush are not prog.

They are unique.

So they defy classification!

So don't do it.

Or else.

OK?

Big smile

I had a friend back in the late 70's and we had this discussion about Rush back then.  He kept pulling out their early albums and compared them to ELP. (Of course he played guitar and I played keyboards so you can imagine which side of the fence we were on)  But in the end I did respect Rush for creating prog music. Not completely in the box prog but prog none the less. I think of several songs  even their radio cuts, that could be classified as prog as the structure of the song was so different than your usual rock and roll or pop song.  They are not huge favs of mine but I do like them and I do think they are prog and they do belong here.

Oh no - I agree with Aqualung on this!

I have always considered Rush borderline prog, though, like Aqualung, I don't really have a problem with them on the site.

Styx, on the other hand, does not qualify as prog even on a good day...

Peace.

whoa whoa, how can you say that? the material on albums like a farewell to kings and hemispheres is not just hard rock with "prog flair," its PROG! If Rush is hard rock with prog flair, than groups like Opeth or Queensryche shouldn't be considered prog either.

I personally think Rush is very borderline hard rock/prog but I'm fine with them in the Archives. Styx on the other hand ...........No, just no

I've never been sure about considering Rush a prog band - they're not really, are they?

Fantastic hard rock/metal band that goes above and beyond, writing epic length tracks with quiet bits and heavy bits and all manner of sections - but is it really prog?

No.

But I'm glad they're in the archives - EVERYONE should hear Rush.

Mind you, I hear what the Dead Jester is saying...

Maybe I've had one too many "happy ciggies" tonitgh...

A passion fruit?

Sgt.:  Huh!  'Flu, eh?  They should eat more fresh fruit.  Ha. Right.  Now,
self-defence.  Tonight I shall be carrying on from where we got to last
week when I was showing you how to defend yourselves against anyone   who attacks you with armed with a piece of fresh fruit.
(Grumbles from all)
Palin: Oh, you promised you wouldn't do fruit this week.
Sgt.:  What do you mean?
Jones: We've done fruit the last nine weeks.
Sgt.:  What's wrong with fruit? You think you know it all, eh?
Palin: Can't we do something else?
Idle (Welsh): Like someone who attacks you with a pointed stick?
Sgt.:  Pointed stick?  Oh, oh, oh.  We want to learn how to defend ourselves
against pointed sticks, do we?  Getting all high and mighty, eh?  Fresh
fruit not good enough for you eh?  Well I'll tell you something my lad.
When you're walking home tonight and some great homicidal maniac comes
after you with a bunch of loganberries, don't come crying to me!  Now,
the passion fruit.  When your assailant lunges at you with a passion
       fruit...
All:  We done the passion fruit.
Sgt.: What?
Chapman: We done the passion fruit.
Palin: We done oranges, apples, grapefruit...
Jones: Whole and segments.
Palin: Pomegranates, greengages...
Chapman: Grapes, passion fruit...
Palin: Lemons...
Jones: Plums...
Chapman: Mangoes in syrup...
Sgt.: How about cherries?
All:  We did them.
Sgt.: Red *and* black?
All:  Yes!
Sgt.: All right, bananas.

(All sigh.)

I must remind the right honourable gentleman that a monologue is not a decision.
