I don't understand why almost nobody mentions Echolyn. Not only are the ratings of their albums through the roof but all these people who enjoy American rock'n'roll as well as Gentle Giant don't seem to have heard of them or given them a chance. You're wasting time reading this, go buy "As The World", they were almost famous (and for good reason), only to be shut out by sony (I think that's the right name anyways) and should have made millions. Thanks a lot American music industry!

IMO:

"Cabezas de Cera"

Definetly one of the best avant prog band in Mexico. If you love yourself you should give it a listen.

I don't think any prog bands (except maybe the Floyd) get the recognition they deserve from the world.

Taal - I love this band and only the two albums to their name.

Alphataurus - Just the one album by this Italian Symphonic band of the '70s

Urban Spacemen - An English JamBand, influenced by Allman Brothers/Grateful Dead, but with a hint of spacey jams, like Gong.

Alamaailman Vasarat - Great prog klezmer based music, danceable, yet brooding and dark at the same time.

The obvious Swedish bands:

Anglagard
Anekdoten
Par Lindh Project
Landberk
Mort Macabre

The Tangent and Parallel Or 90 Degrees - The Tangent are more well known of course, but Andy Tillison's other band is less so, I don't even have any!

Discipline and Matthew Parmenter - Unfolded Like Staircase is a great album, but I've not heard Astray yet, but Matthew Parmenter did add me on Myspace the other day and has some tunes on there to listen to.

Plus some bands I'm familiar with and some I'm less familiar with:

White Willow
Wobbler
Anti-Depressive Delivery
Circulus
Polar Bear

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Same here  but add  Kayo Dot to the list. Very "fresh" but not very known.

I listen to a lot of European prog from the seventies which are virtually unknown anywhere. Some more " well known" ones would be Omega, Midnight Sun ( aka Rainbow band ), Gate, Octopus, Ruphus, FRUUPP, Floh de Cologne. Pell Mell, Kin Ping Meh, Anekdoten, Eilliff. There were so many bands that were cropping up during the seventies and then just disapearing into thin air. A band from Quebec, Canada called Octobre was completely overlooked outside this country in the seventies. They were a King Crimson meets Gentle Giant band and Igot to see them once. No light show no effect just great progressive rock.
