I play guitar as my primary instrument, and I have a teacher. I first played the violin, but I gave up on that after 5 years. I also play piano, and I just took up the cello. I want to get a ukulele next.
Oh, my main influences on guitar are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, John McLaughlin, and Al Di Meola. Maybe some EitS influence, too. Edited by Arrrghus - February 15 2007 at 20:44 |

I play rhythm guitar for a band called Unorthodox, even though me and a friend of mine who plays bass are trying to branch out and do some bass and drums jams on our own time.

Who here is a prog musician?
Me. What do you play? I play in a band which exists since 2 years. Once it was punk but we've changed our style into prog (really, that's not a joke and it's not that kind of "prog" like "Muse"). Well let me describe the style of our band: Crazy melodies in odd time signatures who often change, a lot of distortion, not very hard, more a mix of Stoner- or Noise-Rock and classic progressive rock. Unfortunatly we can't find a keyboarder. Our band has 5 members: 1 Lead-Singer, 2 guitar-players, 1 bass-player, 1 drummer Who are your influences as a musician? I'm extremly influenced by Gentle Giant. |

i threw together an instrumental version of Captain Beefheart's "Moonlight on Vermont" in 4 hours, playing all instruments. unfortunately, the drums are synthesized on a MIDI keyboard because I don't have a drumset or know anyone who drums, it's all slightly out of sync because of my poor mixing, and worst of all the program I used to record it is Windows Movie Maker. I recorded a "video" of me playing each instrument (basically me sitting in a chair with headphones listening and referencing from the original track) and used it's AMAZING two-track capacity, then fused the two tracks and made a third, fused those, then a fourth, and fused that. Other than all these technological limitations, it's quite good if I say so myself, accurately reproduced with some personal touches with the bass and rhythm guitar, while the lead remains accurate. oh, and I brought in my friend who "plays" sax (he's REALLY bad) and got him to solo Beefheart-style over the second half of the track (the part where you'd usually hear "old time religion"). This Christmas I'm getting some real recording software and equipment, and once I get that and figure out how I'll post it here....or somewhere...how do you post stuff here anyway? I play drums, percussions, and piano/keyboard. I want to learn bass. Influences- Bill Bruford, Gentle Giant (as a whole), Phil Collins, and Zappa (with his zany, complex, insane percussions). I have been in a few unoffical bands, all of which went absolutely noplace. I prefer to play prog, but i also enjoy to play swing and classical (not classical piano mind you). I have written a few songs all of which are horrible and haven't been used...yet (i hope). O i can also sing...horribly. |

Instruments: Drums, Percussion( does that differ from drums?) and (rudimentary) keyboards. Neal Peart is my main influence and his drumming is gold to me. The way he meshes with Lifeson and Lee is stunning. I'm also a songwriter...since '95.

I'm a classically trained Cello player, but a play many other instruments and i sing. As for my musical activity, i have three projects: One is a prog-power metal band called Golgotha, i'm doing vocals/bass there. Another one is my solo project called Mnemosyne. i play all instruments. It's an avant-garde/space-rock/post-rock/metal project influenced by The Residents, Sigur Ros, Frank Zappa, Mr. Bungle... The other one is a post-rock project called Monserrat... i play bass/cello/theremin/guitars/vocals.
As you can see, i'm a big lover of all Prog...

I'm not a virtuoso player like Emerson, Wakeman, Livgren,
ect., even though I listen to them, along with Banks, David Palmer, ect. Never took piano lessons ... I've just been playing for years. I'd say I'm a prog musician because I play originals that are not pop or straight rock. My songs are conceptual, and I rarely follow typical song structure. I favor programming sounds, textures, odd chord structure, and orchastration, over complex playing. If I had to mention someone I play like ... probably Wright, Barbieri, Jarre and Fast, would come to mind. Cool to hear other players on here. |

As some of you may know, I am a prog (wannabe? Oh, let me be good with
myself this time :D) musician. I play keyboards in two bands, Elisena
(more metal and structured band, www.elisena.net, not yet fully on line
but soon we'll add our demo mp3s) and Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata
(www.ogd-project.org, the trio with which we are preparating the
12-hours jam session).
From a prog rock point of view, OGD are more interesting: fully improvised jam sessions, done with a very progressive afflato. The site is quite convoluted, but simply clicking in the centre you'll gain our mp3s :D We're not selling anything, we just do those jams for passion. To fully answer your question: my main influences are undoubtfully Jordan Rudess and Jon Lord, with some spices trown in by Keith Jarrett and Ozric Tentacles and Italian Progressive by the compositional point of view. I'm a keyboard player just like you, Skarabrae... I played in a band
for the most of my high school/ college years. We tried to make
something similar to Can mixed with Os Mutantes, and we succeeded: we
sounded just like that two bands put inside a mixer at full speed.
Without the blood'n guts, i mean. To cut a long story short, let us say
"we sucked".
But i have to confess i couldn't be called a "prog musician" for two reasons: first, my main influence has always been Brian Eno. I've spent the last ten years trying to play something as loud and noisy as his moog solo in "Editions of you" with my old and trusty korg ms20. I'm still trying... The second reason is i'm really such a bad player... I've never been musically trained, and work mostly by intuition, so i'll never be able to play a Wakeman- like solo. To be honest, i've had my best times as a musician manipullating analog synths, sequencers or (my favorite) a small radio plugged to an amp and a lot of effect pedals. MW broadcasts can give you a lot of nice surprises if you know how to turn the knob properly. Ah! And that nice toy melodica a girl friend gave me years ago... |

Some years ago I played in many rock bands. We played mainly original music with some covers (Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Faith No More, Radiohead, Hendrix and others....) I even played in one band some Sex Pistols & Ramones covers. The lead singer was into punk and it was a good opportunity to make some money. The good part is that you only require 10 minutes to learn to play the whole song, only 3 or 4 chords.

I play trombone and I'm starting to sing a bit. I'm trying to form a band, but I really haven't had time to get around to it yet. I'm taking a music theory course that my high school is offering to learn how to write music (although I have quickly learned that I hate Counterpoint).

Do vocalists in prog bands get to post? I was in a band but just recently had to move across the country w/ my family. Sucks being 17.... Anyway, we used to cover a little Rush but that was about as progressive as we could get without a keyboard player. Problem was, we are all in highschool and into Yes and Genesis...try finding a kid in highschool who can play like Rick Wakeman and Tony Banks.....
