One of my favorite rock bands is Cheap Trick. I have only seen them live once and it was at a low point in their career when they were playing county fairs. Still, great to see live.
Cheap Trick - Southern Girls These ladies I have mentioned before in these polls, including a live instrumental. Their live performances are great as the playing is tight and the enthusiasm appears genuine. Hard to pick one. Enthusiastic audience and possibly the happiest drummer on the planet. Ok, here's a potpurri of musical styles à la Mila:
Lamomali: Manitoumani > short one Lamomali is a project by French rock musician Matthieu Chedid in collaboration with various Malian artists, esp. singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara, the great kora player Toumani Diabaté and his son Sidiki Diabaté.- There is a longer version of the same song, but I prefer this one, esp. the video. [Max Raabe & Palast Orchester: Küssen kann man nicht alleine] out of competiton M.R. is a German musician and band leader. His music is strongly inspired by German-language Schlager and chansons from the 1920s and 1930s, accompanied by humorous and witty lyrics. The title of this song translates to 'You Cannot Kiss by Yourself'. Here Raabe is joined by German singer Namika. English Lyrics Sara Renar: Jesen > short one S.R. is a singer-songwriter from Zagreb, Croatia. Her music style can be described as experimental/indie/pop mixing subtle melodies with electronic and theatrical elements. English song title: Autumn/Fall. __________________________________ I might replace the first song with this one:. Arthur Hnatek Trio: Monotonous > long one A.H. is a young emerging Swiss jazz musician. He has performed at La Cigale (Paris), Berghain Kantine in Berlin or Montreux Jazz Festival to name just a few.- The video was filmed during a sunrise concert at Les Aubes festival in Geneva (July 2020).- This is a calm, meditative piece that fits nicely the atmosphere of the venue, located on the shore of Lake Geneva.- The title of the piece is somewhat misleading by the way. _________________________ p.s. I'm on a business trip atm so I barely had time to look for songs, esp. because three are required this time, also in different lengths.  They're usually filed under post punk; acknowledged by good parts of the metal audience as far as I know but it is pretty clear that they don't belong there, and I also think the sound is not punk anymore. It's hard to pin down what exactly the difference is, but somewhat easier when you look at their whole catalogue; this is maybe their punkiest except the very early days. Yeah, I love some of my rock to be relentless and uncivilised. This is a major example and for sure not for everyone.Edited by Lewian - November 13 2022 at 16:38 |

Limbo is a one-and-a-half minute jaunt that's very catchy live, nice keyboards and bass parts Patalo - French orchestral piece with march time music, not exciting start because it is too centred on the singing, which is a parody singing, whereas when the accordion comes in the song takes off, excellent instrumental piece, typically French atmosphere, great listening, candidate Long song - Here is an avant-garde piece (or contemporary classical music?) all on the cello, with distorted and perhaps electronically treated sounds (or perhaps not), in any case non-melodic music, dissonant, atonal at times... what can I say? It certainly wins the Grand Critics' Prize! I don't know to what extent I like it, on the whole (at times I like it a lot) but it is certainly original and interesting, it is music that I don't listen to easily, so excellent contribution In conclusion, Kees provided one of my nominees for the short song (for the long song I don't know) Edited by jamesbaldwin - November 13 2022 at 16:15 |

Cure - Open is a very good song, after a (too long - but we are in a concert) ecstatic beginning starts a cacophonic, mesmeric rock, where the sound is perfect, you can hear the voice well, you can hear the distorted guitar well, and the wall of sound of the rhythm section. Song the same from beginning to end, I would say almost monotonous, the composition here is not the strong point, but the sound (vocals and distorted guitar) and the atmosphere is. Psychedelic song in its way, but powerful, and this is the good thing, the Cure when they are powerful give their best. Candidate Asteroid - O Mamma! how ugly the singer is. Heavy metal or punk song? Song as bad as the singer, who with his guttural sounds wants to inspire a sinister atmosphere. I understand the genre, it has its musical reasons, but I'm not in this mood. Go! - After two very sustained rock songs Christian offers us a very synthetic and melodic stadium synth pop, a more pleasant song than the previous one but all in all not exciting. In conclusion, Christian provided one of my candidates for the long song. |

I also find it far easier to find long live versions that I love than short ones, so I start with a long one. Everybody knows this band, maybe too many know this song even, but they haven't appeared in the interactive polls yet as far as I remember. Also in the beginning you may wonder whether it's a live video and the sound is remastered, still later you see the show and it's a fabulous thing really. The Cure started their Wish album and the tour with a song called "Open" and ended it with a song called "End". When it comes to live performances, I need more time to find two short songs than one longer piece or song, you see? But this two-stage voting procedure does not allow this option which I personally prefer.

@Lorenzo, is this about live performances on stage only or do e.g. performances on a tv-show - Performance in tv is ok or live studio sessions count as well? - No, there must be an audience that listens. Btw. with live performances a time limit can be a bit difficult. Extended versions of songs are often played including impros. A limitation to one song per entry is feasible. However, instrumental pieces are often longer. - I put an average time limit precisely because live performances are likely to be long, and I would not want someone to put on two 10-minute mini-suites or jam sessions (total 20 minutes): since we have to listen to two songs, I would not want to make this obligation too demanding, and so I put a maximum time limit of 5 minutes per song, so at most we listen to music for 10 minutes. In short, the songs cannot be long, they are medium-short. But, to be more flexible, I can say that one can be even longer than 5 minutes (for example about 7 minutes) and the other must be shorter (for example about 3 minutes) |
