On this occasion, I would like to symbolically light a candle for the Ukrainian people through this song. Pikkardiyska Tertsiya is an Ukrainian six member a cappella vocal group. In 2014 "Plyvne kacha" was played on Kyiv's central square Maidan Niezalezhnosti during the funeral for opposition fighters who had been killed following the revolutionary events of February 2014.

I actually think that such a song shouldn't be part of any kind of competition or poll. However, I believe that this poll would not be complete without at least one song from Ukraine. So, this will be my contribution.

Pikkardiyska Tertsiya: Plyvne kacha

The title of this Ukrainian folk song (which is inspired by orthodox choral music) "Plyvne kacha (po Tysyni)" translates literally to "the duckling swims down the river Tysa". The lyrics are a dialog between a mother and a son going off to war. These are two of the most moving lines of the song.

"My dear mother, what will happen to me if I die in a foreign land?"
"Well, my dearest, you will be burried by other people . ."

I think I'm going to go with the Pearls Before Swine song, as it's about an insidious intruder, which is what we've been seeing slowly creeping in over the last few years.

So, you must decide between the Ukraine choir and the song by the Waterboys.

Two songs completely different.

The Uckraine choir is austere, almost dissonant in some passages... As you konw, I appreciate the vocal music, even if it's a little heavy as in this case. So, in my opinion, not a masterpiece but a good piece, quite extreme. Not fot all, but if you want to choose it even for its moral value....

In my opinion, The Waterboys's song is very pleasent, more enjoyable than the Ukrain choir. But less original, from a certain point of view.

Actually, I kept the choir from competition (you may have missed that), SNL pulled the video from YT (at least for a while, haven't gone back to check again).  Trying to decide between The Waterboys and Pearls Before Swine.  But I do appreciate the advice, anyway, as there haven't been many (if any?) reactions posted to the material.  Not that everyone can or should, just noting.

And from Page Four to here, some additions:

Christian:  Heinz-Rudolf Kunze “Kadaverstern”  A beseeching song of having given everything one has and still being turned away from.  Not sure if the lyrics are about the singer trying to help someone who is addicted, who nonetheless chooses the addiction over the help of the person to overcome it, but it sounds like it to me.  Mostly synths/keyboards and percussion, with a minor key lead guitar near the end.

dr Wu23:  Procol Harum “Homburg”  One of my favourite bands of all time, I certainly know this one backwards and forwards.  RIP Gary Brooker, one of rock’s finest singers and musicians.  The Church “Destination”  I loved Starfish.  Such a feeling of despair in this song.  You’ve picked three winning songs this time, although I’m sticking with my personal rule.  I think you probably hit the most on a combination of feelings that I am experiencing now, however, so special recognition for that.

George:  Cloud Nothings “Wasted Days”  Whanging guitars from the get-go with drums and bass, at a fast pace.  Kind of a punky-garage-y sound, plenty of young energy and angst.  Can’t blame people for kicking against the over-intrusion of work in peoples’ lives, it is so soul-sucking. Goes off into a very fevered jam, great stuff!

Catcher 10Funkadelic “Maggot Brain”  I of course know of George Clinton and Funkadelic, but don’t think I’ve ever heard this one.  Spoken word at first, then quiet guitar notes and drum beats, in a bit of a blues sort of sound, a bit of a dirge.  Fuzzed lead guitar steps up, solidifying that this is blues (at least for now).  Very moving and empassioned lead continues and becomes kind of psychedelicized, then turns again to the slightly fuzzed blues, with more distortion and whammy bar added.   At the end, goes back down to a more subdued guitar and drums.  A good listen, full of emotion.

Samuel:  Jorge Palma “Monólogo de um cidadão frustrado”  A completely different feel than most of the pieces brought here this time.  Very despairing lyrics of the futility of modern life.  Yeah, I feel lucky I am not having to struggle like this, it is very hard to make one’s way in the world, especially these days.

I'm somewhat surprised by this. I thought everyone on this site knew Van der Graaf Generator. On the other hand, pretty much nobody I speak to in real life has ever heard of them.

I more-or-less stopped listening to the radio years ago (apart from other people having it on). When I did listen to the radio, the station was usually Triple J. Triple J started its life in the 70s as the Sydney AM radio station 2JJ (I grew up in Sydney). It should be noted that Australia was not big on Progressive Rock. The music 2JJ played was what we would now call "classic rock" with a substantial Australian content. They did play prog, but my main exposure to prog was from elsewhere. This was however after the classic period of prog. In the late 70s, they shifted to Reggae and New Wave. But even during the 80s, they (as Triple J) still played some prog. They always played music that was alternative to commercial pop. I occasionally turn on the radio to hear what sort of music they are playing, but currently have no idea how to describe it.

> I have the impression that triple J plays nowadays what I would call mainstream alt music to commercial pop. Their end of the year charts or people's favourites (Triple J Hottest 100) they publish on Australia Day. It became increasingly mainstreamish over the years. But there is also triple J Unearthed. Here they play less known and also unsigned artists incl. undergroundish stuff. That's more in my path. They focus on new music, though at least as far as I know.

I wasn't sure what you're asking here, but recalled a recent documentary that said all Swiss people have a bomb shelter. There is nothing like that in Australia. In the event of a disaster, Australians can call upon emergency services, and there are messaging services that warn people of impending disaster. But there are no preparatory measures required to be taken by ordinary citizens. In particular, there is currently no conscription of Australian citizens into the military.

Sure, there is a public emergency service. I was rather reffering to an individual emergency plan and measures recommended to the citizens. That could be many things, f.e. security measures in your house, precautions about how to contact family and friends in case of emergency, where you should go, what you should take with you etc. We have f.e. an alert app whereby we are constantly kept up to date. - As for Switzerland, yes we do have also private bomb shelters but they are not necessarily in the house where you live since relatively few people own their own house here. - We have a general military service and alternatively there is a civil service. Both are responsible in the field of disaster relief. We have also volontary fire brigades.

The first song I put up "Mother Mother" was a result of seeing this thread and asking myself and then saying sarcastically to myself, "everything's fine," which sparked a recollection of the song.

In the case of the second song, "Tired Angels" it was part of a shuffle of my liked songs I had on as I was working, which immediately fit in with my current mood,so I popped over here to post.

For my third song, it was a something I had not ever heard before but came on and my mood sort of synchronized with. Note that I am not as despondent as the lyrics suggest, but am grinding away working on a Saturday morning due to project deadlines. So definitely like "Wasted Days".

First listen through Page Three, with 2 additions to Logan's:

Logan: Rocky Horror Picture Show “I’m Going Home”  Haven’t seen this film in many, many years, went in it’s heyday to see it at an art theater, with the full-on audience participation happening. I hope you start to feel less like you are sleepwalking in your life, I’ve felt that way sometimes, too, as has probably everyone.  Michael Gira “Blind”  Begins with guitar and a choral sort of wash.  Deep voiced male vocal.  A song of looking back over one’s life and realizing how little one really knew, and indeed, how much one kept hidden from oneself.  A reflective self-discovery piece.

George:  Mountain “Tired Angels (To J.M.H.)”  I haven’t heard this in ages.  There is a certain sound to Mountain that is very indicative of the time in which it was recorded.  Heavy, fuzzy and referencing Tolkien to boot.  What's not to like?  Thanks for bringing this out of the dark recesses of my memory.

Mila:  Out of Competition Gubaidulina “In tempus praesens (Concerto for Violin and Orchestra)“  Solo violin beginning.  Ominous and disconcerted feel to the violin solo parts, the orchestral parts emphasize the sense of unease.  Certainly fitting in our uncertain times.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Keep 'em coming... I'd say final nomination please by the end of Sunday.

This one may be hard to appreciate without understanding the German lyrics.
"I've died for you
To make you survive your sick life
How can you bear
That you haven't given me a chance from the beginning?

I've died for you
The smell of fire always hangs over you
You call it history of the world
But as of today you're only animal experimentation

Now I reach for the waste falling from the rich table of the Lord
Somewhere far away up there
On the cadaver star."

A very ambiguous time, I'm over the moon with so many concerts and other cultural events (way more than before covid) but I can't shake the feeling of remorse for having fun when there's conflict on the other side of the continent. This song was written during Cold War and I think it expresses a similar feeling although slightly exaggerated.

Another version of 'What's  Goin On'...by another band from another place....Wink

"Our instruments have no way of measuring this feeling
Can never cut below the floor, or penetrate the ceiling.
In the space between our houses, some bones have been discovered,
But our procession lurches on, as if we had recovered.........."
