So for me the word "prog" came after "progressive", more in the 80's-90's. Prog is merely an attribute of progressive.

I'm curious about this distinction, Catcher, how come?

Hi,

To make it even worse, as a statement about the folks that thought they knew and owned "folk music", this statement goes even further back to Bob Dylan, who basically told them all to get fudged, and deservedly so. I don't think the English/British contingent felt any different, and their work is remembered a lot more than we give them credit for and I wish we did not credit the arsenic-holes that said such stupid things!

I'd say, by the end of 60's it was in use in the way Macan and Caravan describe it. They are the best sources, we've got here.

Hi,

I think this is bad ... it's like saying that none of us know anything, and did not live through anything, and someone has to quote something that supposedly has more to say than many of the folks here on PA.

In my book, this is disrespectful to a lot of folks here and needs to stop! it was not even used in the way that Macan and Caravan describes it ... but it sounds better because the rest of the history and story is being ignored. Nothing against Caravan, and I love them dearly, but even Pye would be embarrassed by that statement!

^^^ I myself have this exotic bird to offer (a local edition of SEBTP):

It seems Prog never displaced other labels such as Pop, or Rock, more likely just joined them.

The best way to dispel this myth is by what many have done before. Namely, track down music magazines of the era like Meloidy Maker and New Musical Express and see if the term progressive rock was actually used as a descriptor of this music by the writers of these publications. They did not. Music was described as either rock or pop with no thought in the slightest to any type of sub genre. Groups like Fairport Convention were not even referred to as folk rock in 1969 and 1970 due to the backlash it would have caused by folk purists This mentality carried over to other types of rock music. Led Zeppelin was never referred to as blues rock for the same reasons. This is why it's so difficult to find printed sources regarding this question. Once that is understood it becomes easy to see why virtually none exists.

I don't think, I can see a better conclusion than the one quoted here, so I'm off now. Smile

Late 60s but before liner notes to Caravan's debut. Sounds better?

Sounds OK to me. There is still the problem of the semantic variation over time, also discussed here, but we can say that by 1969 some of the acts considered progressive today (at least Caravan) were already progressive then. So, there probably must be a "semantic core" to the term that was already present by then.

The words may have been used in 1967 but the genre was not defined till the 70's as we know it today.

So we can agree that the first time the words "progressive rock" were used was 1967....?

The label was created in 1967, the label that didn't mean exactly the same thing as it means today. Cream is very often included in the same "proto-prog" category as the Beatles, the Nice, Moody Blues, Procol Harum. Would I call them first progressive rock band? No. Were Cream progressive (innovative, groundbreaking) for year 1967? Yes. I would definitely say that some of their songs are complex, innovative, influencial. We are looking on progressive rock from different perspective than Chris Welch in 1967.

Well I struggle calling it a label in 1967, that's why I said "words", since the definition was not defined till later on.

Funny. I remember art rock being bandied about in the deep past but never progressive rock. Not once. I think this is a bit like AOR that has also been given earlier dates for its birth. I recall an album review in the 60s calling ItCotCK "the art rock album to end all art rock albums". And it did.
