FURNITURE Known as one of the unluckiest bands in the New Wave scene, one-hit-wonders Furniture weren't a permanent fixture in the charts, but that may have been due to their label Stiff Records having gone bankrupt shortly after signing with them, after which their career went downhill faster than Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Year Pos. “I was a big early Genesis fan and I loved King Crimson." How Tears For Fears added prog to pop and ruled the 80s A shared love of Blue Oyster Cult, Genesis and King Crimson saw Tears For Fears become much more than an 80s pop band. Roland Orzabal is talking about his fondness for Genesis and King Crimson. “I was a big early Genesis fan – Foxtrot particularly. And Genesis Live was great. I loved King Crimson – especially Discipline, if you can call that prog? It depends what you define as prog. There used to be a lot of reverse snobbery – Genesis came from a public school so therefore they can’t be any good, they’re ‘not like us’. Okay, punk rock was a jolt and a Copernican inversion. We went from having long hair and playing eight-minute guitar solos in our teenage band to all of a sudden covering The Damned! Fashion is incredibly powerful in music, in the zeitgeist. You got to a certain point in the late 70s where you could not wear flares anymore. And my platform shoes had to go. It was horrendous!” |

^ I've never used cheapie earphones or doodles, whatever they are.
![]() My sound system's okay. I'm just not a big fan of Frankie Goes to Hollywood that's all. The only Pleasuredome I've ever been in was at Blackpool's Pleasure Beach, but that's another story.

Hi, I love the Frankie Goes to Hollywood album ... the first side, non-stop is a wonderful massive play and you really have to have a LP and a great sound system to get the full pizzazz of that album. The side 2 of well known single hits is also nice ... but not really as good and strong as the side 1 of this album ... again ... loud and a good sound system ... you don't get the effect unless you have some $500 dollars earphones ... sadly all people use these days to hear most music is the cheapie earphones and doodles that you can stick in your ear ... those wiill never give you the "experience".

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD A Liverpool band who gained notoriety by having their sexually-suggestive single "Relax" banned by Auntie Beeb, which inevitably, led to it going straight to number one in the charts and staying there for five weeks. ^ From The Fixx to John Foxx by way of A Flock of Seagulls, their two most recent albums in 2018 & 2021 have the added bonus of including a full orchestra, which I guess could best be described as Symphonic Synth-Pop.

These guys almost epitomized the entire "new wave/synth pop" scene of the early-1980s - it's hard to remember those days without also thinking of them. I saw them live twice, in fact your previous entry The Fixx opened for them in July 1983. Once original guitarist Paul Reynolds left, they were never the same. I see you gave their 2018 album Ascension 5 stars - maybe I'll have to give that one a listen.

A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS A Liverpool band led by former hairdresser Mike Score, famous for having the most distinctively coiffed hairdo in the flamboyant history of Synth-Pop, which could easily provide a nest for a seagull. His eye-catching blond mane of hair has variously been described as looking like a dead racoon, or like cascading waterfall bangs, although he's as bald as a proverbial coot these days, bless him. Here's Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of Mike Score, or something to remind me of him back in his heyday - like a video for instance). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Year Pos. THE FIXX Not a Synth-Pop band as such, but The Fixx are one of the best New Wave bands I've found whilst surfing The Net, and One Thing Leads to Another and they've now become a Fixxation. The Fixx never really disbanded - they've just been making endless comebacks for the last forty years, making them a semi-permanent Fixxture in the record stores, if not the record charts. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Year Pos.
