Hmmm...I get that response from women a lot...the poo-throwing that is.
I'm much too busy to read entire posts, especially long ones such as yours. I just focused on a few words and thought I'd give it a try. I'm always looking to expand my harem. Hey I like em around 19-22 anyway. Legal, but not too old to be obnoxious and ugly. ![](smileys/smiley36.gif)

Maybe it's because Classical Music was dug into me -while still a foetus, by my mother, that I love Prog to bits.
I actually find it hillarious that Prog is a guy-dominated thing. My reason? I come from New Zealand...or more specifically... I go to Auckland University. Here- it's the WOMEN who love the Art's and the bizarre things- far moreso than men. In fact, most of the guys here are rough-neck, dumbarse drongos. Men like my boyfriend- who got me into prog- are very rare heavenly creatures. Believe me- he is the ONLY man in this country who deserves to be shagged by me! Okidoki- I see now that last comment was totally ridiculous so know that I'm ONLY putting it here for comic-relief.

Yes, I find it bizzare that prog is deemed a man thing. The reaction I get to it from most men I know, is that it sounds 'girlie' ![](smileys/smiley5.gif)

Most people can tolerate the cape and the boots, it's the Geddy Lee silk robe and the Alex Lifeson 2112 straw hat they have difficulty with!

One of my Mum's favourite albums is "Tales From Topographic Oceans" but she despises most of "Relayer", mostly because of Sound Chaser. Allegedly, she likes stuff with a "decent tune and melody". Could her view of "Relayer" be the stereotypical women's view on prog as a whole?
|
It's cool that she likes TFTO! Have you played her Close to the Edge??
Most women who have ever expressed an opinion of prog rock, just say 'It's wierd' which doesn't really mean much, or 'the record is jumping' (in response top irregular time signatures) this basically translates to 'you cant dance to it, why play it?'
There are exceptions to the 'men only' rule though, I know a few! ![](smileys/smiley4.gif)

This may sound too out there for some of you but I personally think (and I am speaking from own experience of course) that prog and music in general becomes a most wonderful venture once the music is let to speak for itself, rather than being treated the way most people treat it (not only women, mind you): as some sort of musical "mirror" for one's own feelings and thoughts. The purpose of music for these people is not to expose oneself to unprecedented feelings and emotions and thoughts but to get a confirmation of one's feelings by the means of 'safe' music. It is what I would call a self-centered way of listening to music and I certainly adopted it in my teens. It served its purpose, of course, but it also prevented me from exploring music's more hidden splendours...
I once read a study online, which dealt with women and prog rock, wish I could find the link again... My take on the subject of women and prog is that there are probably more women into prog than is generally believed, but that for most women listening to prog becomes an intensely private affair due to the lack of social support/social sanction for such an endeavour. Then again, I know better than trying to convert my female friends to the ways of prog, when keeping in mind that most women of my age are way too busy bringing up children and taking care of the household, in addition to working outside the house! Many women lead busy lives, they don't have the time or the energy to really devote themselves to something as abstract as music... Thus they prefer to take the "OC route" as somebody here wrote already It's the female version of winding down by sprawling on the couch and watching sports so don't be too hard on your ladyfriends and wives! lol

I think that women (In general) likes beat, they likes to dance. Because they cannot shut their mouth more than 30 seconds, so they cannot sit down and concetrate theirself on music.
