I see what you mean.  In the sped up portion of "Holiday in Berlin" and the frequent use of harpsichord on the album, there is a similarity to the tones he liked to use on the synclavier.  Composition wise, I'm not sure, but timbre-wise, yes.

I'm thinking of getting CPIII last after I get the remaining posthumous albums, since I completed my collection of the UMe reissues. Good idea?

Yeah... like "The Crabgrass Baby".  There really aren't any other FZ tunes like it, except "Dio Fa".  Dark droney stuff.

Yea exactly.

Dio Fa is on Civilization Phaze III?

Burnt Weeny Sandwich is one of the best Zappa albums, top 20 easily, top 10 depending on my mood.

Broadway doesn't have that crap.

Took me a second to realize you weren't referring to Broadway The Hard Way. I was about to say, "uhhhh, yea it does".

On my first true listen the other day, I remember feeling a similar feeling of wishing there was less recycled material. It doesn't ruin the album, and some of the new stuff is cool, and yes, the concept and outlandishness of some of the music and dialogue makes up for it. There's a level of "darkness" during some moments of the album, like those looooong held out bass notes.

Gonna have a listen to Thing-Fish again, I just have to find a good time to do so, there has to be no one around ;)

Got a bunch more reissued Zappa albums in the mail, listening to Francesco Zappa right now, as the others are all double albums. I may have listened to this one before once, but it was years ago. I know Frank didn't write the music, but it feels like something I'd enjoy listening in December during Christmas time. Just has that feel, what with the synclavier sounds and all.

Haha...yeah. I mean, there are points were it's funnier than the old songs, but I just prefer new material in general. Though, I must say I quite like Won Ton On. Works perfectly for me.

And excellent choice of one of your first Zappa albums.

I actually bought Thing Fish before I bought a lot of FZ albums.  It was actually one of my first!  I got into him in the early/mid 80s and only the more recent albums were still in print (and no CDs yet).  So my first time hearing "Mudd Club" , "Meek Shall Inherit Nothing", and "Torture Never Stops" were from the Thing Fish album.  I still interject Ike's asides in my head when I hear these songs.

I still only have it on vinyl, haven't made the move to CD for that album yet.  The vinyl box is nice.

It's interesting how you don't really hear Frank himself on the album, what with all this dialogue.

The Harry and Rhonda bits are uncomfortably funny.
