Lookng forwards to the new Transatlantic release - sadly it will be "ooooh - all of those people, all the people who think that evolution is troooooooo, oh yeah - your gonna burn in hell yeah - up to your necks in poooooooo" or some such nonsense - then Stolte will save the CD with an awesome instrumental guitar break that would make an pickled onion cry....

Well, "V" is still my favorite Spock's album by far. Snow on the other hand, I just find a bit thin. Weak melodies stretched out over 2 CD's, with a pretty ordinary and unoriginal concept. However, I have grown to appreciate some of the individual pieces on the album, and it's certainly not outright bad. I love Beware Of Darkness, probably my second favorite SB album. Thanks for the interview link! |

Actually, there aren't any Roine solos on that album. He actually did percussion, acoustic guitar, some backing vocals, and some keys. According to him in an interview I read a while back. He wasn't sure in the interview what, exactly Neal used, but that was what he said he sent Neal. You are however, correct about both Rudess and Hackett. |

As I promised, here's a brand new interview with Neal, talking mainly about "Momentum".
Hope you like it. Seeing the previous posts, I can't really understand how can someone like Neal's music (and aesthetic), but not like "V" or "Snow". Just can't do the math... |

Do you know the difference between who and what you are?

Strangely I don't have a lot of Spocks Beard stuff and still don't own The Whirlwind. I really like NM as a solo artist especially his reliance on a 3 peice format which suits my taste it would seem. I also never really got into V and Snow does seem overblown as Zumacraig suggests. The only other Spocks Beard album I own is Feel Euphoria which I havn't listened to for a very long time. I might make a point of listening to all three back to back this weekend to see if my feelings have changed.

how do y'all rate the spock's beard stuff with and without morse?
i like The Light, with some reservations. it has some cheese and The Water is tough to get through. BoD seems like a sophamore slump to me. The Door and Walking on The Wind are two of my favs though. i just cann't get into V. maybe at some point. and Snow is so overblown. as far as post-morse goes, there were a few good tunes on X. are the other albums listenable? |

Yes - when I said what I said I didn't mean that his pre-exit stuff was bad (because it's not), I was just saying when he quit DT I think his music was a little out of focus, but I think that now he has revitalised and his is drumming as well as ever. And I agree about A7X and AM - it's horrible, and I think it shows how he was a little out of focus around the time he quit DT. I hope he doesn't continue with the heavy rock (Adrenaline Mob) style, it really doesn't suit him, I hope he realises that. And their album Omerta got bad reviews from what I've read.

No.....His drumming on pre-exit DT Neal Morse/Transatlantic stuff was excellent too. This type of music suits him better, his technical playing comes out more on this Neal Morse material.
I enjoy the DT stuff a lot.....but that horrid AM and A7X stuff does not fit him well, I know he likes to let it all hang out sometimes, but that stuff anyone can do, he is wasting his talent and time on that.
Metalcore fans do not appreciate his drumming.
It will be a joy to see him perform live in a couple weeks.......On the T2 Tour he was amazing, I expect the same this time too.

I think the reason that the drumming is so good is because Portnoy has finally gotten over the whole DT thing... He recorded Testimony 2 only a couple of months after quitting DT, maybe his feelings were still conflicted... but I think that now he is ready to put 100% into everything he does, and he's obviously done that on Momentum.

I have fully listened to Momentum, several times now......All tracks are good. I do skip over Freak though........Momentum and Thoughts Pt5 are the highlights for me. WWE is ok, as a song on its own I give it a 3...not 3.1 or 3.2.....3.000000
The whole album for me would be a tad shy of 4.00. The drumming is what stands out for me.......Portnoy is really sounding excellent right now.
I too am hoping something real special happens on the next TA album.

There's a lot of instrumental breaks on T1, but I think they are better on T2. Not to mention I feel that T1 is way over-bloated. "?" has a lot of good instrumental breaks, and even feature extended solos from Jordan Rudess, Roine Stolt, and Steve Hackett.

Is it likely that I'll have to listen to Testimony - apart from the mawkish christian Halleluyah - jesus loves all those who go to work on a tricycle - type of lyrics...Is their any decent instrumental breaks.... |

It's funny how people hate Neal's stuff a lot, yet most of his prog albums are over 4.00 ratings, whereas say, The Flower Kings, have only 2 albums over 4.00
I can't see myself giving the album more than 4 stars though. It's not like Testimony 2 or The Whirlwind status.
By the way, Momentum is really growing on me, though the epic is taking longer than I thought it would. Listening now and I'm starting to be able to put the pieces together. I will say, however, that I'm glad recording a new Transatlantic album got pushed back, as the material on Momentum is very Neal-ish, and I hope he brings something else to the TA table next year. |

Actually, no one who reviewed it gave it one star. People who rated it, without reviewing it, are the ones responsible for the 10% single stars. However, these get the least weight compared to member reviews, reviewer reviews, collaborator reviews, etc., so don't really impact the overall rating significantly. I think you'll find that any somewhat well known release on this site has quite a few 1 and 2 star rating only ratings. I consider them completely meaningless without a review. |

I think that it is both. I think that you are going to have the people that are totally turned off by the Christian themes. I think secondly that this site has a whole chunk of fans that live for the weird avant music or chamber music and a whole chunk that live for the play as many notes as possible while squealing like a pig music and therefore anything that has an accessible sound is 1 star to them.

It seems that a lot of reviewers really dislike Morse's music. I find this somewhat surprising. For example, over 10% of the people who have reviewed the Momentum album have given it a one-star rating. Is it the Christian themes that turn people off to his music or is there something horribly flawed about the music that those of us who like this type of music can't detect? Any ideas?

Being the first Morse album I acquired and the first one he autographed at the TA Whirlwind Tour it has a special place in my heart.
