It was ideal for getting me to sleep when I was living next door to noisy neighbours. Its not a bad album but I can't get that excited about it tbh (3 stars in my book).

1989: Miracle Mile (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doW4s-1ULOc
Miracle Mile is Tangerine Dream's 36th album overall and their 12th soundtrack. Tangerine Dream still remains a duo at this stage with only Edgar Froese & Paul Haslinger mentioned in the credits for the album. Miracle Mile isn't a sporting drama as the title may suggest, but an apocalyptic thriller centred around the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles. This is one of Tangerine Dream's more memorable soundtracks and definitely worth checking out. I believe there's around sixty Tangerine Dream soundtracks in total, so we still have Miles left to go and it'll be a Miracle if I "complete" this discography by Christmas. "Sun Gate" was the sole track co-composed by Froese, Haslinger and "the new guy," Ralf Wadephul. The song originally was written as a vocal and the melody was replaced by a keyboard part. Then guitar was added. IMO, it's one of the album's best tracks. I'm not sure why Wadephul didn't stick around much longer after the tour. He seemed to enjoy being part of the group. RW: "I admire Edgar's ability to grasp and elaborate the mood, the feeling of a piece; Paul's ingenious technical capacities and playing virtuosity. I hope we'll be together for a long time."

1988: Optical Race - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzFvZmwNlqs&t=2s
Optical Race is Tangerine Dream's 35th album overall. That's 18 studio albums, 6 Live albums and 11 soundtracks for anyone who's still counting. Optical Race is noteworthy for being the first album without long-time member Chris Franke, meaning the usual TD trio became a duo of Edgar Froese & Paul Haslinger for this album. It's also notable for being their first album on Peter Baumann's Private Music label, marking the beginning of "The Melrose Years" era. Unfortunately, in a momentary lapse of reason, Optical Race is one of three Tangerine Dream albums I gave away to a charity shop (along with Underwater Sunlight & Lily on the Beach), so I must have needed my eyes (or ears) testing at the time as I've regretted giving them away ever since. Anyway, what's the first prize in an Optical Race? Do you get to choose a free pair of glasses at Specsavers? Yes, those exotic eastern dancers really ARE performing in time to the music of Tangerine Dream! Track Listing:- 1. Marakesh (8:17) 2. Atlas Eyes (4:04) 3. Mothers of Rain (5:13) 4. Twin Soul Tribe (4:38) 5. Optical Race (3:13) 6. Cat Scan (5:35) 7. Sun Gate (4:44) 8. Turning Off the Wheel (6:11) 9. The Midnight Trail (5:54) 10. Ghazal (Love Song) (5:00)

Thanks! I just found the playlist for Babylon 5: The Lost Tales on YouTube and added it to the bottom of my list. It wasn't lost after all.

The Lost Tales is a full-length album with artwork. Those other Babylon 5 things are CD EPs. I wouldn't bother with them, either.

"Livemiles Part I" is a new studio creation; the music is fabulous. They should've released another longform piece, or two more, for Side B, under another title. In fact, they did have another longform piece, the one Edgar and Chris recorded after Johannes left and eventually released on the Dream Roots collection: "Valley of the Sun." "Livemiles Part II" is an extract from the West Berlin concert that was Franke's final appearance with the band. Afterward, he departed and took half of all the gear they used with him. They should have released the whole show, unabridged, because it's excellent.

^ The Calling soundtrack isn't currently available on YouTube and I gave up listing Chris Franke's Babylon 5 soundtracks when I realised there's over fifty of them. If you want to have a listen to some of the many Babylon 5 soundtracks though, you could check out the abbreviated 5-hour playlist on YouTube.

Having already featured the solo works of Edgar Froese, Peter Baumann & Johannes Schmoelling, now seems like an opportune moment to list all of Christopher Franke's solo albums too, although that doesn't include his numerous Babylon 5 soundtracks, as they would take almost as long to itemise as Tangerine Dream's entire discography.

It's 1988 and we've reached a transitional stage in "Untangling the Tangram" of Tangerine Dream's labyrinthine discography. Not only was 1988 the year when Chris Franke departed the trio, but it's also the year that marked the end of "The Blue Years" on the Jiive Electro label and the beginning of "The Melrose Years" on the Private Music label, so with that in mind, this seems like the ideal time for an update on the 34 albums featured here so far. Yes, 34 albums overall and we haven't even reached the end of the 1980's yet.

Yes, sometimes the discussion has been free-ranging - a bit like a carton of eggs - but I'd be the last person to complain about off-topic-ness, given my past record for straying off the subject of discussion. When you say LiveMiles was your "sleep" album for a long time, I hope that's in a good way and not because you found the album soporific to listen to.

Had to catch up on 111 posts. Barmy although there were a lot of off topic debating going on.
Underwater Sunlight is their last masterpiece for quite a long time imo. After that Tyger is interesting but just doesn't gel overall and Live Miles was my 'sleep' album for a long time.

Not to worry. I'll be taking an Epic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway here soon with Christopher Franke, where I'll be sure to encounter some Enchanting Nature Over the Pacific Blue ocean where the Raven flies, and including a stop-off at the Babylon 5 bar & grill along the way. I'd love to get hold of all of the Tangerine Dream soundtrack movies on DVD, and that includes Three O'clock High too. I've watched three of them recently on YouTube:- Sorcerer; Wavelength; & Flashpoint; and tonight I'll add Shy People to the list too.

^Most fans view Shy People as a mixed bag. Personally, I've always liked it. I like the three songs. The gloomy instrumentals are thick with atmosphere.
The 2016 Dragon's Dream remaster adds three previously unreleased instrumentals: "Swamp," "Nature," and "Going to Town," which is an instrumental version of "The Harbor."

1988: Shy People (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-_SsZg0Z8k
Shy People is Tangerine Dream's 33rd album overall and their 11th soundtrack. The movie stars Barbara Hershey and Jill Clayburgh. The little-known soundtrack is one of Tangerine Dream's best in my view and features three memorable songs too, so don't be shy, give it a try. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 25 2022 at 23:28 |

^Regarded by the majority of TD fans as one of their top film scores. '80s classic! A lot of good/great films don't break the bank. I like all of Bigelow's films. She's very good at what she does.
