From what you've told me so far, it sounds like the  1990's weren't the greatest decade for Tangerine Dream, but I have a strong feeling there's going to be a Turn of the Tides for the better when Linda Spa joins the band for their 1994 studio album. Wink

TD makes a comeback, eventually...

...but Turn of the Tides is less memorable than Melrose, even. Confused

Melrose is the 20th studio album and 39th album overall and we've now reached a major waypoint in Tangerine Dream's long career. Melrose (after which this TD era is named) is the last album to feature Paul Haslinger, but it's also the first album with Edgar Froese's son Jerome becoming a full-time member of the band  (and later being a prominent fixture in their touring line-up). Melrose may not have an "Uptown Top Ranking" in Tangerine Dream's humungous discography, but it's certainly more entertaining than Melrose Place. Tongue

After Optical Race and Lily on the Beach, this was the third album by TD where I found myself skipping entire tracks. (It's going to get worse.)

That rating is highly suspect, btw. Tongue
Okay, I'll downgrade the Melrose album to a 3-star rating, seeing as I only listened to the album this morning and the only track I remember now is the title track. Embarrassed

Clap Like Firestarter, Heartbreakers consists of entirely original music by FFS. It's brilliant. They used the same equipment, more or less, as heard on Poland

To mark the end of the eighties decade, now seems like a good time for an update of Tangerine Dream's 39 albums so far, having reached a transitional point in their long career with Paul Haslinger departing and Jerome Froese joining the band around the same time:-

Thanks for the recommendation. Thumbs Up My favourite Tangerine Dream soundtrack album so far is "Legend" (1986) - a truly beautiful album! Heart

3 stars 1990: Destination Berlin (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G7JXQHMzig

Tangerine Dream are close to home for Destination Berlin, their 13th soundtrack and 38th album overall. Destination Berlin is not a movie soundtrack as such, but a musical score for a revolutionary (if you'll pardon the pun) new 360 degree cinema in West Berlin, featuring scenes of Berlin shot from a multi-cam video camera mounted on board a helicopter and then displayed all around the circular walls of the theatre where it can be viewed from any angle - a bit like a Google Earth street view several years ahead of its time. Smile

Fasten your seatbelt and watch those sudden sharp turns. 1990s TD goes downhill fast.
Even if the studio albums take a downturn, I'm really looking forward to seeing Tangerine Dream's Live performances with Linda Spa, including:- Rocking Out the Bats; Live at the Tempodrome Berlin; The London Eye concert; and the Electric Mandarine tour, to name just four. Thumbs Up

Tangerine Dream are still "Rocking Out the Bats" as a duo with their 37th album overall and 19th studio album. Lily on the Beach is notable for being the first Tangerine Dream album to include a saxophone, which would later feature regularly in their stunning Live performances. This album also marks the first guest appearance of 18-year-old Jerome Froese (son of Edgar), who was soon to become a full-time member of Tangerine Dream. Oh, and one other thing too: Lily on the Beach contains one of the most original and amusing of Tangerine Dream track titles:- "Too Hot for My Chinchilla" - and it's a great piece of music too! Thumbs Up

I think the music would have benefitted from better sounds. The ones used veer the proceedings dangerously close to "contempo." I haven't listened to Lily in a long time, but when it was new, I listened to it a lot. However, I stopped with "Valley of the Kings." The rest of the tracks sound like throwaways, and "Long Island Sunset" could have been done by a hundred other groups. That's probably the first track by TD that made me wince.

Still...a better album than Melrose.

I'm glad you liked the Miracle Mile soundtrack as much as I do. I'd run a Mile to pick that album up from my local record store, although it'd be a Miracle if I didn't have to stop and catch my breath along the way, especially at my age. Tongue

As already mentioned, Miracle Mile is an apocalyptic drama, which reminds me that the Francis Ford Coppola movie "Apocalypse Now" was mockingly known in the film industry as "Apocalypse When?", because it took forever to make. LOL

Big smile

I've owned Miracle Mile on cassette, CD and now the 2CD. I first rented it on VHS (it seemed to have a brief theatrical run) with nary an idea of the film's premise. I loved the score and figured...why not? I wasn't merely pleasantly surprised. And that ending...wow. A wonderful '80s relic.
