Exactly my thoughts... But I love a lot of new prog like Arena, Transatlantic etc., but these two praised bands, generally speaking are bland to my tastes.

Van Der Graf, just ran into them when i started reading stuff here, so havent given them all the time i should, but so far they dont move me at all.
ELP, known them forever, but i find em boring, would prefer Moody Blues anytime
Dream Teatre and Most of the other Hard Rock acts, to me they all sounds more or less the same. Not that i cant stand them, but they dont leave much of an impression on me.
Hard Rock i like : Tool (incl. APC & Pusifer), Mars Volta.

This is a great thread. One I had been thinking of starting my self. For me it`s the following...
-anything by Riverside. I know I`m supposed to like them but I just don`t
-anything by Porcupine Tree after In Absentia. Loved that cd and some before it but after it....blah
-Not sure if Harmonium is considered "popular" but I`m supposed to like their second cd but I just don`t
- I`m still trying to give Wobbler a chance but so far I haven`t been able to get into them.

No I don't, but some previous posters have mentioned them so i thought I'd go with the flow. They're often cited on the forums in one context or another and they do nothing for me at all so I thought I'd list them anyway
I know what you mean, I just find them a bit 'take it or leave it' - if I want to rock out I'd choose different bands to you (hard rock more than prog), but that's what it's all about I guess

I just can't get into The Flower Kings. Also, have tried Spock's Beard several times and they grew on me a bit...but still not blown away.

I remember reading a thread somewhere; a poster was saying to someone that you have to hear their first album first. I completely agree - if someone offers to show you any album but Kobaļa as a first exposure just say no thanks and step slowly away. If you're reading this thread and haven't heard Magma, start with Kobaļa. Maybe you still won't 'get it', but at least you will have given it a fair shot. Me likey.

I'm not shocked at the amount of proggers who can't seem to access the celestial styling that is Magma ...they're arguably the most esoteric band on the planet. If you don't get it on first listen, you'll probably never get it
...not that there's anything wrong with that

Disclaimer: No hatred for bands or fans of said bands: these are all bands that leave me cold 'cos I couldn't get into them - and in each case I've heard enough of them to form that opinion.
Re Rush (most folks seem to have an opinion ): I'm not a massive fanboy or anything even close to it, but IMO they're easy to get into and I don't really understand what there is to dislike about them. |

As I follow this thread I keep asking myself WHY?
Why don't I like this album or that album? The obvious answer is that there's a lot of music out there and some of it is just not going to appeal to you. But what about when it SHOULD appeal to you but doesn't?
Here's an example. I like a lot of Italian prog but I have three Italian albums that I just can't get into. They are:
Il Balletto Di Bronzo - YS
Corte dei Miracoli - s/t
Uno - s/t
Now, each of these albums received decent reviews here on the site and are considered by some RPI fans to have been important to the Italian prog movement. Also, I have albums that I like by other bands that include some of the musicians on these three LPs. But, why not these three?
All of the ingredients I like are there, but I can't get into the music.
So, is it composition or arrangements or what?

It is probably special for many people from the North American continent, simply because the first prog band they ever come in contact with is Rush, and first loves are always special. But that's not the way it happened with me. (....) Same here. I started listening to prog in 1975 but I never met anyone who listened to Rush. I only noticed how popular they were when I "landed" on Progarchives. But if I had discovered them back in the seventies, would I still be fond of them now? Perhaps. After all I still enjoy about half of the tracks on WHITE ROCK, NO EARTHLY CONNECTION and THE MYTHS OF LEGENDS OF KING ARTHUR AND THE BLOODY KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. (Well, at least RW has a sense of humour!)
But what an avalanche of venom you got, Baldfriede (and sorry, I'm aware that must be one of the worst mixed metaphors ever), when you indicated Rush was not for you. After a fierce outburst of anger, one chap even had the cheek to exclaim "Don't patronise me!" Well, if I look at some of my favourite bands, I don't give a toss if other people can't get into them. After all, neither my wife, nor my daughters, nor my best friends like them. 
One more band I just can't get into? Okay, I'll admit it. MAGMA.

Brian Eno did not only make ambient albums; I highly recommend "Another Green World".
And to say that Magma is not special - man, a whole genre was named after the music they invented.
