The problem is that the artists you just can't get into are the ones you sometimnes end up disliking....
I tried with Sigur Ros, believe me.... now I realized I rather not visit Iceland or I'll actually go and have a serious talk with the guy.... 
I tried to get into The Mars volta.....
Now there are also cases where you try and you don't get into but you don't end up disliking the artist, like me and most king Crimson or jethro tull... you just put them aside, like if they didn't exist....
Most of the time, the bands you manage to"get into" are bands you actually end up liking

ELP - they represent everything that Prog was rightfully criticized for in the 70s. Zappa Transatlantic - fast food prog, some incoherent musical pieces thrown together at random into epic "suites" for the sake of progness. Neoprog bands with very few exceptions (some stuff by Marillion)

Although I don't really appreciate Gentle Giant, especially the sound of drums and the horrid vocals of the lead singer.

If you are considering Kansas too poppy, you must be going by their hit songs. Check out anything off of their first six albums. There is some poppy stuff, but most of it is more upbeat than pop. The two can be similar. Their first three albums are filled with darker stuff. Kansas uses a lot of Genesis and Gentle Giant influence in their music. It takes a while to hear it, but once you do you'll be shocked. Maybe your inability to get into Genesis is part of the reason you can't get into Kansas.

I just recently got into the Flower Kings whom I haven't really been able to understand up til now. I also just recently got into Wobbler. I don't think I'll ever truly like Dream Theater. I remember immediately liking some of the bands that seem to be hard to get into. At first listen I loved Camel, Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator.

Now we're talking ! I almost started doubting myself reading all those enthusiastic comments about Pawn Hearts. At least you agree it's weird. Some even call it great music ! On the other hand I can agree with you that other albums by VDGG are more like ... normal. Godbluff is not weird at all for instance and a pretty normal and fine album. |
Don't get me wrong; I would give "Pawn Hearts" five stars. I am not afraid of weirdness; on the contrary, I welcome it.

There's a lot of bands I don't get and I'm quite happy to leave it at that (Styx, Supertramp...), but I don't think I've ever tried to love a band as much as I tried to love Genesis. I have 4 or 5 of their (yes, Gabriel-era, and I happen to like a lot of Gabriel's solo stuff) albums, but it just doesn't work. I bought every album thinking "maybe I'll like this one better" but no, it's not working. They do nothing for at at all.
