It's all in the sound formatting. I reccomend FLAC or 320 Kilobyte digital file formats.

APPLE's lossless audio Format on I Tunes is pretty good as well.

As far as devices are concerned though. Just get an I-POD from APPLE. The software is so simple to use. Can't go wrong.

iPods are pretty good, and fairly cheap if they're a few gens old

I don't see why one device would be better for one genre and not another. Portable players are all about convenience, so get whatever works for you. For example, my car has iPod hookups, so I got an iPod.
