totally, with his custom marshall amp he was the only guitar player to ever reach the level of "eleven" giving him the edge over all guitarists of the time, and allowing him to plunge off the cliff of tasteful dynamics.  He also innovated guitar playing as we know it now with this "trademark solos." Jimmy Page andJónsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros can't hold a candle to Nigel Tufnel when it comes to playing with a violin bow because he was too hardcore for the bow and he just used the whole violin, while kicking another guitar to accompany his kick ass solo.  if Nigel Tufnel isn't prog as well as spinal tap, I don't know what is.  Their advancements from "gimme some money" to "flower people" all the way up to their experimental rock at the "puppet show with spinal tap" is a testament to how prog they are.  Who else would be able to actually integrate Mozart and Bach into one as Mach and create such a beautiful piano piece as "lick my love pump"

They are so prog... they had a musical trilogy in the saddest of all keys D minor, they had epic songs, epic solos, they used violins on guitar action, they dabbled in jazz-blues (blues-jazz really)...  they are more prog than Yes and King Crimson combined.
