I'm fairly selective about what I actually buy and besides I own my home and have a dedicated music room to store it all. What bothers me is what will happen to it when I die since my daughters and 2 sons in law don't seem interested in prog .

For prog music, I would say no, my collection isn't too big. I listen to many styles of music, not just prog. My music collection in general is not huge either, compared to many of you. (But family members think I have too much. Ha!) I used to have more, but had to part with some when I had to move. The music formats I have and use are records, cassette tapes, CDs and MP3 downloads from Amazon.

I'm much more selective now in what I buy. If it's just something cheap in a garage sale, it's no big deal. But if I'm going to pay a much higher price, I research the album before I buy it.

I skim the surface with all of my music- especially because I spend TONS of time with podcasts.

Nope. Not big enough. I sold a whole bunch of cds years ago but then decided to stop that and rebuild my collection. I'm still rebuilding. I don't even think I've hit 1000 yet. I'll get there soon though.

Why? Were you wanting to get your hands on some of it??? LOL

I'm a bit halfway from breaking the CD barrier of 1600.  Throw in surviving vinyl VHS and DVD and I'd bust through.  We are talking prog because it is mostly prop or should be considered prog. Big smile

BTW this wasn't an intentional effort.  It just kind of happened to happen...

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

My record collection I accumulated in my twenties was large. When I return to visit my mother, I tend to be amazed at how many I'd forgotten that I had. When it comes to my CD collection I have entirely with me now, it's too small. I buy new music at a very slow pace because I spend lots of money on guitar equipment. I've done some transferring from record to CD, which sometimes comes out with semi-decent quality, sometimes not.

I have probably around 900 prog albums so plenty of room for expansion.

I don't get rid of anything. Even if I don't like it I want to have the reference. There are things I pretty much never listen to and have some Cds in a storage room. Perhaps it a difference between having a collection and a library. What i actually listen to would be the collection and the entirety is my library. Anyway, in my case it is constantly growing and I am fine with that.

There are 43,000 albums listed on PA.  Let's say most aren't essential to a collector of the best progressive music. Most compilations aren't essential, most live albums aren't essential, and most bands are inferior to some other bands (which bands those are will vary from person to person, but anyway)
So let's say 4,000 albums are essential - that's less than 10% of everything on PA.
You can disagree with that number I've chosen and read it as 5,000 or 10,000 or twelvety if you prefer.
Any more than your chosen number, and your collection is too big.

I mainly do digital music, so "size" isn't really a problem for me.  If it's an artist I like, or if I listen to the album and find out I really like it, I usually buy a physical copy...mostly because it's just nice to have that physical copy, and also because I've gotten quite a few of the albums I really like signed at concerts and festivals I've been to.  But it does get hard to keep track of artists as the collection gets bigger and bigger.  That's why I undertook a project to rate all my music on rateyourmusic.com and make lists for each year - that way when I'm trying to figure out what I want to listen to, I often go to my lists and look at what's in the higher ratings for each year.

I'm not reading all the pages but I'm sure it's been said in one form or another. It's never too big. Someone asked me that way back in the 80's and it never occurred to me to stop then or now or in the future.

My Prog Collection got too big the day I bought my first Galahad album.

From this I learned that no matter how much I scrape the bottom of the bucket, I will never again have the experience of listening to "Selling England by the Pound," or "Close to the Edge," or "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" for the first time.
