I definitly agree with this bit. But am slowly coming around to a bit of Dylan. Very slowly. Love Neil Young though. |
- I also love Neil Young, he is Canadian though and there is something inherrently "Canadian" about Seatle so while I dislike most American hard and classic rock bands, I adore Heart. |
Sorry but I HATE Dylan. I love Young.

I could never get into Gabriel-era Genesis, King Crimson, or Yes.
And it's funny while my tastes tend to run toward the Canterbury scene and jazz fusion, I'm not into Hatfield and the North or National Health

I HATE growls. It isn't musical. |
That makes no sense.

VdGG is a hard fit for me, don't really know why, it just fails to move me. I do have respect though.
Dream Theater! I just don't get it.......though I haven't really tried either .sorry !

I don't particularly like Genesis. I can from time to time, but they would be my least favorite of the 70's Big 6 prog bands.
Same with the Doors. Some of their stuff I do like, but some of it I just have to skip.

Not a big fan of Yes. Sometimes they're okay. It's not complete disdain but I lean more in your direction. I feel in a similar fashion toward Van der Graaf Generator. I can't stand Gentle Giant beyond about 30 seconds. I can't stand Hawkwind, although I like the Elric books. I'm a linguist and I still can't get into Magma. I can't stand Opeth. Dream Theater bores the he'll out of me. What have I forgotten?

not relevant to the thread, but I'd like to help. :)
Ok. Regarding Neo Prog. I can give the Genre's very best of new and old. I'll give you 5 albums to start, so you are not too overloaded. :)
Galahad--Empires Never Last
Comedy Of Errors--Disobey
IQ--Ever
Arena---Pride
T--Psychoanorexia
I think these albums can help you get excited and fall in love or at least respect what the Neo prog genre has to offer. Enjoy. :)

Can't handle growls in music unless it's done sparingly to impart a specific emotion when a track really demands it. A frontman like Fish in his Marillion era could impart extreme anger and a whole range of emotions in his voice without resorting to sounding like a lion with a porcupine stuck in its throat. I can handle the most extreme metal but when the vocals start with that demonic sound that could come out of my Rottweilers nightmares I kind of turn it off in a hurry.

I really don't like prog that much at all anymore. I was constantly searching for new prog. bands to check out when I was in high school, found this website and looked through most of the bands in the archives. I really liked the avant-garde and krautrock back then. Mathrock didn't exist as a sub genre yet but bands like chevel de frise, hella, don cab, yowie, ruins (any other tatsuya project), and magma really impressed me.
Then I got into high school and went to a arts conservatory for jazz. Grew to love Paker, Tatum, Monk, Taylor, Dolphy, Sun Ra, etc. etc. and pretty much stopped listening to most prog. Can and Neu! to this day hold a very special place in my heart, and are bands I try to emulate in certain ways. Simplicity is a beautiful thing. I feel that Neu! is making a comeback in today's new music scene. Bands like Gary War, John Maus, The Holydrug Couple, Belong (Common Era), Broadcast, Human Teenager, Food Pyramid all explore Neu!-esque soundscapes. Neu! can be felt through 80's cold wave, 90's shoegaze, and into today--the motorik beat is everywhere.
I like most types of music prog included, I respect it for what it did/tried to do but I can't honestly get excited about much prog anymore like I used to. This site is still an awesome resource that I peruse every now and again.

I like Yes
Jon Anderson's voice and lyrics make me sick. |
That sounds like a bit of a drawback as far as liking Yes goes. Unless you just listen to Drama or Fly From Here. |
I will rephrase Vibrationbaby
John Anderson's vocals make me sick so I just listen to the instruments and ignore him completely. Simple.
Iván
PS: I love Meatloaf and Steinman's music.
Dylan voice is just a joke
