whao for real there are other groups that are as good as ozric because scene i heard them i haven't heard anything similar to them. they donot sound like early gong maybe in some synth parts but their music is not similar to gong and defetly not similar to Hawkwind but much better. Hawkwind are too dark and spooky, also knowing i really haven't listen to all the Hawkwind' albums. but there are no band right now as good as the mighty Ozric Tentacles. maybe Dream Theater but that is .

Ozrics are great although i only have Erpland i used to have a few live tapes which wore out. I have only ever seen Ozrics in one store in sydney. This place is the black hole of prog
There stands Olias to outward to build a ship
Holding within all we hope to retain
The frame will be so built to challenge the universe
Clasped with the skins of the fish of the plain

Hola from Mexico City:

i agree with you all Ozrick have a great music, if you can try more Kraut rock bands from the 70`s they had a lot of Psychedelics bands real impresive like Gila, Java, Cornucopia, electric sandwich and many more (BY the way i love the kraut rock) . In my opinion the ozricks have that kind of flavor and somebody mentioned the "you album from gong" that is correct. Hawkwind is one of my favorite bands try their 6 first albums all arec amazing very Hipnotich sound.

 is just another opinion.

Alonso

keep it prog

I'm a big fan of Ozric Tentacles and have been searching around for similar bands. In my opinion the only band that comes close is Hawkwind. I've tried Gong, Porcupine Tree, Steve Hillage and Amon Duul but none of them makes me feel like Ozric Tentacles do.

Are the Ozrics unique or are there other great psychedelic instrumental bands out there that I don't know about?

Bob.

welcome to progarchives my friend, i think that ozric are quite influenced by Gong and Hawkwind without reaching the standards of these groups ofcourse.

Oh, you might also want to give Children of the Bong a try... less rock-oriented, but similar feel in the electronics camp.

Hey Bob,

You might also like us - we're definitely partially influenced by Ozric (as well as Floyd, and many others).

Let me know what you think if you check it out! Thanks!

Anyone who likes the Ozric Tentacles should listen to "Die Lφsung" by the British Amon Dόόl (see my post in the thread "The original Amon Dόόl?" regarding the complicated situation about the Amon Dόόl family tree), since Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton are members of the band for this album.

Thanks for all your replies. It has been interesting and I've learnt a few things. From what you've all said, I'm going to start with the following:

Hidria Spacefolk - EP download

Djam Karet - not sure which album to start with yet

Steve Hillage - Fish Rising, Live Herald, BBC radio sessions

Gong - You!

Amon Duul - Die Loesung

I'll also keep an eye out for the other bands you've all mentioned. I've only been visiting ProgArchives for a week and I'm hooked already. If you're an Ozrics fan or a prog fan, it has always been hard to find the music you like. You can't hear it on the radio and I never found any magazines about it. The closest I got was by buying Metal Hammer magazine and listening to the songs on the free CD! The only prog band who got on there were Opeth (one of my favourites now). So I'm really pleased that a friend told me about ProgArchives.

If you love Ozric Tentacles you will be impressed by Djam Karet on Cuniform records.I always thought OT would have been great with a good vocalist.Psycadelic/space rock was the birthplace of prog rock.Remember that all you anti drug prog fans. You dont have to like it but dont deny it.prog is born of mind altering drugs.Amen brothers

Man welcome to the site. I am a huge Ozrics fan, so I know what I speak of. Like many so far in this thread, I HIGHLY recommend Hidria Spacefolk. Almost the same sound, but a bit more analog than Ozric. I have all of their stuff, and it all comes very recommended. Gong is the next logical choice, try the trilogy albums first, Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, and especially You (another great recommendation, Trouserpress). You has jams on it that sound exactly like Ozric, but this was done years before their first album. Again, very recommended. Someone mentioned Djam Karet, these guys rule. If you dig a chunk of King Crimson in your Ozric, then Djam Karet is definitely for you. As far as Hawkwind goes, I have really tried to like them, but find them dull, obvious, and repetative. To each his own. Anyway, welcome, and hope that you enjoy all the recommendations, and begin to branch out into new music. Since I've been coming to this site, I have discovered at least 2 dozen new bands, all of which I now consider faves. Good Hunting!

Just a little note: Ozric members Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton play on "Die Lφsung", a release of the Britsh version of Amon Dόόl.
