Even though I'm new here I thought I'd contribute my humle opinion of GfD. So far, it is the best SW work I've heard in the last few years. It actually feels like Steve has emotion and passion in the tracks, unlike the late PT and Blackfield stuff. I'm a huge fan of pretty much anything SW does (Bass Communion excepted) and I have to say I was prepared for dissappointment but am warmly surprised at just how good this is!
...and can you all stop talking about live performances, living in the worlds most remote capital city means we never get visited by acts like this.

Ok so last night i saw Swilson at the House of Blues, a nice, small venue in Orlando.
100% Brilliant.
Better than the CD in every way. Marco Minnieman was a f**king beast on drums - but honestly every member was great.
Setlist was also enjoyable.

There isn't one.

No there isn't, unless you'd call 45 minutes of Bass Communion drone a opening 'act'. Anyway, attending this show is a must. Better then the album even, never seen so much energy, spontaneity and pur musical fun from mr Wilson.
|
I am so looking forward to it, I got my Toronto ticket the day they went on sale. Anyway, I know what album the BC is from, and I ordered it a few days ago, but I have heard some negative comments about the sheer length of the "opening act". I hope I won't regret buying it. There are three live tracks from the Shepherd's Bush show up on Wilson's GfD website right now: http://www.gracefordrowning.com/ Oh and one more thing: the guitarist couldn't manage to get into the States, so John Wesley is taking over guitar for the North American leg of the tour.

Especially when you're too young to be one of the obnoxious drunks.

I've mentioned it before but it was a standing room only concert that wasn't made clear when I got the tickets. As it turned out there was a balcony area with seats that they could have let us old fogeys into. So my wife decides to hang out at the bar and people watch. I stake out a spot to stand and behind me are three spoiled rich kids who didn't give a damn about the band trashing it loudly throughout most of the concert until I moved.

This album should have been something I played too much to the point of burn out. But I realize why it hasnt been like that. Every time I listen to it, it feels like winter time music. No leaves on the trees, maybe snow on the ground, etc... THAT is when I will listen to it a lot.

It was a tape playing, it wasn't a piece I knew but very much in the BC style. I hope I'm not spoiling the element of surprise too much

This thread and the general positive vibe around Grace for Drowning's got me curios, so bought the 6.99 mp3 version yesterday. This may not mean anything to anyone but myself but I actually enjoy it. I don't know if it will have any
lasting qualities, but right now its a pleasant surprise. Its certainly
better than Opeth's last outing. (funny how recent bands that want to
pay tribute to King Crimson and the likes, often end up sounding like
each other and Anekdoten).
I gave up on Porcupine Tree years ago. If I payed attention to their
lyrics I found them passable at best but very often embarrassing.
Musically there was never anything too exiting either, and after hearing those
Tool-light riffs on Deadwing I thought I never bother with them again. I was actually very pleased with being a person that more or less dismissed all Steven Wilson's music projects.

Thing is Phideaux's latest dropped a lot after the hype was gone. I listened to it on bandcamp the day it was released and I was frankly unamused.
