So I stood in the record shop yesterday, with Fly From Here in my hand, deciding if I really wanted to purchase it. There have been so many mixed reactions to this album online, that I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it. I also am not the biggest fan of their 90s and 2000s work. I walked around the store "browsing", when in reality I was walking around going "should I buy it? Should I pass?". Ive never taken that long to figure out if I should buy or not.
But I eventually gave in. I'm listening to it now for the first time, and the FFH suite is almost done, and I have to say, it was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be. We'll see how the rest of the album fares. Edited by darkshade - July 29 2011 at 17:37 |

Well, Squire clearly doesn't think so!! http://www.mercurynews.com/music/ci_18532630?nclick_check=1 "Squire says the group will likely spend much of the next few years on tour supporting "Fly From Here," its first studio album in 10 years." ....much of the NEXT FEW YEARS?? Who does he think are going to buy the tickets?? Old-time Yes fans are already checking out on this band from what I'm reading elsewhere (Yesfans etc.) |

Nah, they'll just replace him with the bassist from a tribute band. Yes will still exist 200 years from now, with original members' great-great-great-great-grandchildren, tribute-band members, and Steve Howe.

I'm thinking this is the end, except for the obligatory live album and DVD. Time has not been kind to Squire.

I've said this before....B. David is NOT a professional vocalist! Sure, he sang with another band and his Yes tribute in Canada, but I doubt if he had anything close to the workout he's getting on this tour. This is hard work.....touring, packing/unpacking, warming up, singing the gig (and pushing himself because of the reputation he has to fill), and possibly dealing with a touch of laryngitis on the road. He's great on FFH, but he needs a professional vocal coach to help him with the touring pressures. Anderson sang professionally for 40 years, so he knows the routine well, and he was wise to sit this out when his health didn't allow. He'll improve with time, assuming that Yes will be around for subsequent albums and tours. I'm not sure if this is a swan-song or not.....they sold out the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburbs for the 35th Anniversary tour in 2003 (18,500 seats) but are struggling to sell out small venues like casinos on this one.

This post makes more sense than any other. How many of us can call himself a Yes fan? And why? What is Yes that we love or hate, the band formation, their skills as musicians or as songwriters? No, that's what they finally deliver to us. MUSIC! Just the simple emotions that reach us in the deep of our hearts and gives us the need to even type some words here! IMO the worst thing a fan can do is to compare a record to another, a band to another, this to that. This is a complete nonsense! We loose the pure essence of what's behind, what makes us to listen to it again and again, to sing along, no matter it sells a million or just a few copies, no matter what the lyrics is a nonsense, just because it's a mindflow, like poetry is, words that sound like music, the meaning is how it sounds, and what it recalls in each of us. Watch out! Progressive is not just a mellotronish good old style. It might be a research, something way deeper than a different 4/4 signature. Maybe it's done with style, but that's not a style. :) Have you ever asked Chris Squire what he thinks Progressive rock is? He tells you "I don't know".

Quite much time goes talking about David and FFH. Avarage singer in once legendary band, nowadays run by Buggles. What comes from the owen is FFH. Sad story, I've never lost my interest to new Yes album this quickly. We both are happy that Anderson is not involved |

I love Yes MUSIC, I love the performances of Howe, Squire, Wakeman (Moraz - Downes), Bruford (White), and got used to Jon's voice (I don't hate him, I hate his vocal range). But I believe Benoit is an improvement, and I don't care what he thinks of Anderson's voice, as Peter Gabriel said..."I Know What I like" Sadly the music they are doing know is not in the level of the music in CttE or Relayer (Except Soon ). To end, studios can improve the sound of a voice, but not create what doesn't exist. Iván

We all know David was hired because of his stage dance and his rumba shakers technique ... |

I see you really hate Anderson, hope David eases your pain. I still find it odd you loving those classic Yes albums, because Anderson's voice is so essential part of Yes ... It's like saying I love Led Zeppelin but I hate Plant's voice. I'm sure even David thinks Anderson is much much better singer. Yes, they can make miracles in studio Edited by akaBona - July 26 2011 at 16:29 |

Absolutely you have this right, Ivan, and you express your views eloquently as ever. However, equally, I must say that I have never disagreed more with anyone in my life as with you re Jon Anderson.

Why hater? People say here I don't like ELP, Genesis, Dream Theater, etc, and it's OK I simply can't stand Jon's vocal range and lack of style. I joined this place to speak freely about what I like and what I don't like about Prog, it would be futile to be here if I had to only praise musicians. I haven't said Jon Anderson's voice is crap, I haven't insulted him (most likely is a nice person), I simply cant resist his voice but worst his lack of modulation (Hey I like Geddy Lee and even David Surkamp due to the work they did on their voices), and I believe I'm entitled to dislike something and express it with honesty. I believe Benoit David (At least in studio) is an improvement, that's my honest opinion and I will express it with freedom on the place I consider my second house. Iván
