Black Sabbath. I never really got the hang of Led Zepp ... Like GnR, I respect them immensely, but my inner metalhead just cannot resist the Sab. Which was much more than the first metal band, btw.

I voted the 3rd option.
For me especially those 2 bands are equally important and among my most beloved ones, but for different reasons each one. So it would be very unfair to choose one of them... |

Black Sabbath all the way. They destroy almost every other heavy band from the era! And I don't like the 'ripping off songs'-side of Led Zep... :)

I have my reservations about both of them, but in the end Zep win for consistency. Usually, you can count on a lesser Zep song to be at least entertaining, whereas lesser Sabbath songs are usually rather insipid.

I love both, but Led Zeppelin win, by the slightest amount.
Zep are probably technically better musicians, and have a more diverse catalogue But both are some of the most influential hard rock bands in history. I read once that virtually every heavy rock band after Zep and Sab borrowed either from Zeppelin's good time rock n roll (glam metal, GnR, Motley Crue, etc) or Sabbath's doom and gloom (almost every metal band). Zep is the heaven of rock and roll, Sabbath the hell. In a good way.

There is no shame in coming second to Led Zep.
Tony is a great guitarist but Jimmy Page is on another level. |

Have to go with Zepp, mainly because their first six albums were a tad more consistent than Sabbath's first six.

I've never liked first two LZ albums (exept for the few songs like 'Good Times, Bad Times', etc), and Sabbath's first two albums are masterpieces.
On the other hand, LZ IV and Houses of the Holy are blowing away Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (and everything else Sabbath ever did). LZ III and Master of Reality are equally good for me. Sabotage vs Physical Graffiti? Sabotage for me. On the other hand, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die are nothing comparing with Presence and In Through the Outdoor. And after 70's Black Sabbath did at least one more masterpiece, Heaven and Hell, and Dio is a hell of a singer, especially in comparison with Plant. In general, LZ are much more professional band, but sometimes the music of BS I can understand better. Thus, I really can't choose. So I vote for the third variant, I love them equally. |

It was a rhetorical question, as if to highlight what Sabbath doesn't have that LZ has in plenty "Do any of those songs have organ or piano or...."? |

Come on, Sabracadabra doesn't have piano? I am guessing you still haven't properly heard Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Sabotage albums.
As for riffs, LZ's riffs may be complex but they are not very crushing, to my ears anyway. I like riffs that are really crushing, infectious and immediately arouse the ace air-guitarist in me into action. If I want complex chords, I will listen to good keyboard music or stuff where they use guitar as an ensemble instrument, e.g. KC, Genesis. |

^ And does any of it have organ or piano or complex and melodic riffs executed on a guitar with a rich tone?

Led Zep by a country mile. I like that Sabbath established a new genre which appeals to me quite a lot, (doom metal) but for the most part their songs are boring and overly pentatonic based, there is just something lacking in the music. Led Zeppelin just wrote better songs ultimately, I'm sure Sabbath were just as experimental in their own way but Led Zeppelin really mixed a lot of different styles and came out with some amazing songs as a result.
