The first one I owned (and probably listened to) was Muse's Black Holes and Revelations in 2007, though I didn't actually get into prog until later.

Oh happy daze, my first prog (not underground) album was The Yes Album, 1971, closely followed by Nursery Cryme - Genesis. Happy Common Room!

If I recall, I rather liked the Manson `Superstar' album at the time (don't ask, but thinking back, I think there were several proggy elements on it?!) and I started talking about him thinking your Marillion/Jester t-shirt must have said `Marilyn' and the jester was him!
Anyway, that random mistake change out musical paths forever...well, mine, you were well on the way already!

Hey, but I was all 'old school', and you always seeking out the up-to-date stuff. You were into Floyd hardcore, so when some-one mentions Barrett, people listen...........

Well, I guess my first kind of prog-related albums would have been `Queen 1`, `Queen 2' and `Sheer Heart Attack' - those first three special Queen albums! I had never heard such adventurous `pop' music before, and definately got my interest going!
After delving into the usual Pink Floyd albums (Wall, DSOTM, WYWH), I would have to say my PROPER introduction to real prog would have been my chance meeting with Tom Ozric from these very Archives!
He leant me a tape which had Genesis `Nursery Cryme' on one side, and Eloy's `The Power and the Passion' on the over - WHAT A DOUBLE!!!
I had never heard inventive, strange and fascinating rock music like it!
Those two albums are still very special to me to this very day!
And all because Tom was wearing a Marilyn Manson t-shirt - or so I thought....turned out it was Marillion, after some confusion! He knows what this story is about!
Man, what year was that, Tom?! Seems like a lifetime ago! |
Indeed - that must've been early in '95 (ooh, '96??........I still have that paper with everyone's names and phone numbers on it for some reason - it's really tatty now - recall that 'hero' dude who was always full of himself ?? - what a friggin' joker he was - Marcus). Fortunately for us both, those 4 'Traineeship' ( ) classes amalgamated into 1 for those of us stubborn enough to stick with it !! It was that Marillion T-shirt - Marilyn Manson - WTF, are you dodging with my head ??? Amusing thinking back now how a T-shirt can start a cool, valuable friendship. Prog rules !!

well i was about 10 when i was flicking through my dads albums....he is mainly into bands like the who, Bowie, Status quo, Man....and general rock......then i saw this album cover that really caught my eye....never saw him play it so one day put it on on headphones which i often did.........it was "selling england by the pound" by Genesis......then that was it....ended up buying all their tapes and what PG stuff was available with my pocket money......all before i was 13........as a result paid a bit of a price at school as i was the only kid at school that didn't like the chart music.....but then me music taste expanded further over the years.....went alternative and got into bands like the fall and The The when i was 15.....cardiacs came along when i was 17......then i ended up in a record store for ten years where i discovered just about everything and anything.

I'm very proud of the fact that the first album I ever bought (prog or non-prog) was Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre, when I was 11 years old back in 1976. I was absolutely blown away by the album and it certainly helped form my musical taste over the years.
It's an album I still love to this day.

Uncle Meat by the Mothers. It had been out for not quite 2 years when I bought it. I was 12 and forever changed.

A.- Not knowing that Prog existed
As a fact, if I'm not wrong, this is the cover of my LP scanned, which I replaced for the black CD one
B.- Knowing that Prog existed and decided to buy a Prog album.

Burn by Deep Purple, if you count Proto-Prog, Yessongs if you don't. Lots of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin in those early heady teenage days but then quickly moving to Yes, Tull, Genesis, Hackett, and KC.

_____I_____I_____I_____I_____I_____THE WALL_____I_____I_____I_____I_____I | Dude. I dig your Wall!!! Nice one Tom, so as your friend I shall add another brick to it. ________] Nothing forges good friendship like cement and solid prog!! Lol | I couldn't do multiple lines directly underneath one another so it was a bit of a disappointing one row show but slightly effective. Never mind - my sis had Dark Side for years before I acquired The Wall and I was fascinated with that - how it all blended together seamlessly, amazing sound effects etc. The pieces 'On The Run' and 'Any Colour You Like' with the synths always captivated a very young me. I knew I was on to something......
I got The Wall around Christmas 1985. I was 13. Much of the album blew me away - except things like The Trial, Bring The Boys Back Home etc. Then it was Atom Heart and the More Soundtrack and most of the Floyd catalogue. Then came Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Asia, Marillion, Atomic Rooster, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath etc.
I am so impressed with modern Prog these days I rarely spin these 'golden oldies' anymore...... | It is so wonderful that we have had such incredible, prolific prog bands who started it all for us. You had PINK FLOYDand I had RUSH. I can tell you, for me, it was love a first listen. Oh and seriously, I like your WALL. Very creative. | Oh - I like RUSH quite a bit too, but mainly Caress Of Steel through to Signals - I came across VDGG/Hammill, MAGMA, most Kraut bands late 80's/early 90's and still continuing. I came across Le Orme's Felona and Sorona album by chance at this 2nd hand record shop who had it filed under 'F' - the dude at the counter thought it was some male/female duet album - his loss was my gain . Somewhat fragmented banter here, but I recall my significant Prog discoveries with fondness.
Oh yeah, thinking back now, it was Floyd's 'Live At Pompeii' video that really instigated my love for Prog. I was expecting a live show of The Wall, but instead got such mind-blowing things like Echoes and Set The Controls, and Careful With That Axe............. |
SET THE CONTROLS is freakin wicked. Helped push my love and exploration into electronic prog like ASH RA TEMPLE, GOBLIN, AUTECHURE, FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON, APHEX TWIN and the great TANGERINE DREAM.
I owe FLOYD a lot. ;)

Fascinating. That means you got familiar with that before In the Court.
