^ I would not start using the word "superstition" when I'm talking about religion - but I do think that they have one important aspect in common: There's no good reason to believe that they're true. Someone who believes in tarot cards needs the same kind of faith as one who thinks that God listens to prayers.

I would say so.

Christianity, at least, views superstitions (like throwing salt over your shoulder for "luck") as much different from religion. No Christian would say Islam or Buddhism is a superstition unless they were trying to be offensive. A big difference is that prayer is directly asking God for something, and it may or may not happen. A superstition is doing something that will have an effect because of the arcane unexplained laws of the universe. I understand why an atheist would view all religion as superstition, but I hope you can see the difference between praying to a deity that you believe exists and trying to predict the future with tarot cards.

I do like the word happenstance, more than I like serendidipidety, even though it doesn't remind me of salma Hayek.

anyway I'm religious therefor not superstitious.

I do believe in tarotcards because God has made those cards, since he created everything. and therefor it's not superstition, but an acceptance of the possibility to foretell the future through signs given to us by God, and those signs can be found in cards, dice, coffee and even in alcoholic delerium. Most superstition is based on actual facts, it can bring bad luck to walk under a ladder (imagine a painter above you having a heart-attack and falling on top of you and ending your life, that's bad luck that wouldn't have happened if you had walked around it).

anyway just rambling because I got bored.

Not religious, but I must admit that I consider myself somewhat superstitious.

Does that make you somewhat religious? Smile

I see the paradox. But I really don't care about how various religions define 'sin'.

The second question is much worse. I'm not because I find dogmas repelling and hate the idea of 'organized' superstition.  Perhaps I'm somewhat religious in the sense that I can't really rule out the possibility of a god. But I don't have the need for one - so no, not religious.

I'm emotionally attached to some hymns though, they remind me of dead people. And this is my favorite Johnny Cash record.
Confused

About religion and superstition. I find a statement like "I believe in god (be it any of them) but I'm not superstitious"  very odd. But again - it all comes down to semantics.

The reason I invited religious people to vote 'yes', was merely to increase the number of yes-voters, so I wouldn't belong to (as I foresaw) such a large minority. Smile

Atheists and believers in other religions might see Catholicism as superstition.

The Catholic Church considers superstition as sinful.

According to the OP, whichever way I vote I'm either an hypocrite or a sinner... another of those no-win dilemmas! Wink

Me.  And Rob.
I believe in God but I wouldn't call myself very religious.

I have a black cat and things are even worse.  She treats me like furniture.
Acceptable if she treated you like a chair or a bed, but like a sideboard, wardrobe or bookshelf I'd probably be concerned.
What?

I like serendipity because it's a nice word, unlike happenstance, which isn't.

I like serendipity because it reminds me of Salma Hayek.Big smile

This is a valid reason.
