What The F*+%'s wrong with Bill? All of his old peers are still playing, Collins, White, Palmer, etc. Hell, I saw the great Buddy Rich playing when he was in his 70's and he was unbelievable! I'm so sad to see this. His jazzy off-beat time signatures were such an influence on prog-rock drumming. I hope he changes his mind in the future. He made the early music of Yes and King Crimson even more exciting than it already was.Cry

What a shame, still I dare say he'll continue recording and may be tempted out of retirement for the occasional gig from time to time.

I've had the good fortune of seeing him live on a few occasions.  For those that haven't there are many performances available on DVD. Big smile

A drummer with a distinctive style who has certainly made a big impact on the world of music.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Well, I'm glad that I saw him live at least once: with King Crimson in the Thrak tour.

Bill, you certainly deserve your retirement from public performance!

Well I'm certainly glad I got to see him live with KC on several occasions/lineups as well as in drum clinics. It doesn't mean we won't still hear his magical voice on recordings but I will indeed miss seeing him perform.

Very best wishes indeed and thanks for all the inspiration!

Oh Bill well I wish you a long and happy retirement though the short announcement talks about live perfomances only so hopefully theres more music to come. What's the reason behind the decision?
For all the years I've admired your music I only saw you live once, with Crimson in 1980 (or was it 81) on the Discipline tour at the Marquee. Nearly saw you headlining a drum festival at South Bank in 2006 I think it was - regrets regrets!!!

Very best wishes.........

Aloha Brudda Bill. Thanks for the memories... King crimson, Discipline tour 1981 and that unforgettable night
The Trick of the tail tour 1976 neath a 1000 glittering stars. Always will be my favorite drummer.

Well, Happy Chinese New Year to you too...

In that recent BBC documentary on prog Bill already declared that he found touring a complete turn-off. Still, the possibility we'll never again see him playing live again is a real downer... I saw him with Earthworks a few years ago and I thought there could be no greater happiness than to be in the same room with such a marvellous player! Let's just hope he'll keep making records.

Bill retires from public performance

After 41 years of moving the percussive pulse in music and raising people's
pulses in general, Bill Bruford has announced his retirement from
public performance, effective from January 1st 2009.

Bill's contribution to music is celebrated by the release of two new anthologies covering his solo career.

The Winterfold Collection 1978 - 1986 has prime cuts from albums such as Feels Good To Me One Of A Kind Gradually Going Tornado and the  Bruford/Moraz combo.

The Summerfold Collection 1987 - 2008 is a two disc affair covering Bill's period with the eclectic Earthworks group, as well as his partnership with pianist Michiel
Borstlap.

The albums are released on February 2nd 2009. In the UK the Winterfold Collection can be ordered here, whilst its companion can be found here.
