That would be Progressive, but it isn't Proto - proto would be tracks like April, Anthem, The Shield and Mandrake Root.
for those in doubt listen to April from 1969:

Ah yeah, nothing like the raunching guitar riffs and the non-progressive leanings of a short and concise tune like Child in Time ;-)

The Nice are a Symphonic bands, their similarities with
- ELP
- Refugee
Are so big, that i would be absurd to have them in Proto Prog...While most of the bands were doing mostly an elaborate form of Psyche (90% or more PP bamnds have an obvious Psyche connection), The Nice was doing complex and elaborate re-works on classical music.

The beat goes on?????...not Renaissance or their first album?
Full Circle??? better than any Morrison-led Doors???
DP- Concerto??/ the best early DP??
What is The Who on tour???/never seen this one??
I don't know Ball, so icannot judge this one!
We need some comments from you to explain your choices I am curious to know! Thanks |
Trust me, Ball fits. It's no Inna Gadda, that's fer sure...

Those are good choices. i was listening to some Procol Harum last night and they are definitely worth a mention esp Salty Dog and First Album and Shine on Brightly. Classic proto prog.
The Nice are worth a mention too!

Limiting myself strictly to artists labelled proto prog in PA and pre-1969, then:
1. Beatles, Pepper
2. H.P. Lovecraft, II
3. Touch, Touch
4. Vanilla Fudge, Renaissance 5. Procol Harum, Shine on Brightly

- The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (Arthur Brown)
- Procol Harum (Procol Harum)
- Sweetwater (Sweetwater]
- Abbey Road (The Beatles)
- The Doors (The Doors)
IMO Tommy is far better than most of this albums, but I don't believe The Who are Proto Prog).

Iron Butterfly's Ball is an interesting choice. Don't think I'd put in any top 5 list, but In the Time of Our Lives is a pretty good song, as is Soul Experience. I no longer have the album, but I have a greatest hits that has those two songs and they are above par for the course. Strange band, that Iron Butterfly.

Really do not like this label but .....
1- Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Journey
2- Beatles- White Album (personal reasons)
3- Procol Harum- Exotic Birds & Fruit
4- Deep Purple- Machinehead
5- Beatles- Abbey Road

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Not being particularly well-fed with music of this category, I can't limit myself to the luxury of only listing pre-70s albums. But here they are:
1. The Who - Who's Next 2. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour 3. Deep Purple - In Rock 4. Deep Purple - Fireball 5. The Who - Quadrophenia

...sticking to pre-1970 Proto Prog albums
1. Beatles ~ Magical Mystery Tour EP
2. Kaleidoscope ~ A Tangerine Dream
3. Deep Purple ~ Book Of Taliesyn
4. The Who ~ Tommy
5. It's A Beautiful Day ~ It's A Beautiful Day
However... since many Prog bands started out as Proto, my proto Prog albums from all genres would be:
1. Pink Floyd ~ A Saucerful of Secrets
2. Renaissance ~ Renaissance 3. Tangerine Dream ~ Electronic Meditation
4. Soft Machine ~ The Soft Machine
5. The Moody Blues ~ In Search Of The Lost Chord
