Broderick is awesome It's a shame he didn't stay on with Nevermore.
Megadeth is probably the easiest gig his had so far, not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but unless he gets a solo spot with Megadeth, the full extent of his talent and technique won't get a chance to shine

In my opinion Batio isn't worth mentioning, he is a tad obnoxious with his "quad guitar". I do admit he's talented but he doesn't have to be THAT flashy.
If you don't know what I'm talking about take a look..

Haven't anybody mentioned Michael Angelo Batio? or A.J. Minette from The Human Abstract?

I've never liked that typical American shred sound. I am more into the Britsh style of soloing as bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard or Saxon. Those bands play fast and technical But they also know how to rock and put it in a framework of a song. Lot of shred guitarists lack energy.

An academic friend was based in LA ten years ago, and seemed to spend more time checking out the dumper bins in some of the bigger record stores in Hollywood. However, he did come out with some excellent shred albums each for a dollar(!), and sent me a number of duplicates he found, e.g. albums by Marty Friedman (on what I felt a strange chocie for a metal shredder the Kitaro produced Scenes album) , Ron Thal, Michael Lee Firkins (more the country rock end of shredding?), Buckethead (also appeared with Hellberg/Shrieve on one of the most impressive acoustic jazz fusion albums of the 90's Octave of the Holy Innocents), Chris Poland (now with his band Ohm), Marc Bonilla (now with California Transit Authority), Gary Hoey (great version of Wipe Out on his Bug Alley) and Greg Howe (perhaps the one who has moved deepest in jazz rock fusion in the last 10 to 15 years).
I really liked Ron Thal's Hermit (for instance, I Can't Play The Blues works so well on a number of different levels, whilst the range of compositions allow for a range of styles to be laid down) - however, in the UK Ron Thal albums are either unavailable or outrageously overpriced on CD format (I managed to buy Bumblefoot last year after several years of waiting).
Also check out that other Swedish shredder, Mattias IA Eklundh's solos - would you believe he too can be found playing with Jonas Hellberg, this time on Hellberg's latest album Art Metal -
Both albums have 20+ tracks, so instead of long solos you get to listen to him provide 2 to 4 minute snapshots of tunes, and therefore hear a much broader cross-section of musical styles in tight arrangements, for which his shredding has been adapted.

Shawn Lane did a large body of work with that bass great, Jonas Hellborg, so perhaps if you check out Hellborg's name on You Tube you might be lucky and see Lane too. Otherwise, Lane is on Hellborg's Indo-jazz fusion CD Icon and the accompanying DVD Paris. I also believe that the Abstractlogix site has a number of videos with Lane and Hellborg. Lane started with the country rock band Black Oak Arkansas, but I first came across him on (ex. Santana) Michael Shrieves' Two Doors CD, and then through a good half dozen album collaborations with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipe. Lane was particularly interested in the music of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, considered to be one of the greatest 'Qawwals' vocalist - some which ca be heard in Lane's guitar playing - and the occasional wordless vocals (e.g. on Two Doors).

Steve Morse being the new guitarist of my fave band fits very well being him one of those "virtuosos". Blackmore being very classical. Although I loved Tommy Bolin's solos.

Well I never liked very fast typical metal bands solos. I hate them (the solos) they they're the best guitarist. I rather prefer technique and improvisation.

Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal is absolutely amazing IMO and is often overlooked. Any other fans here on PA? |

Michael Angelo, while technically impressive, not always the most musically impressive. He can put feeling in his playing sometimes and he has a few good songs, but not a great fan in general.
Rusty Cooley, sometimes plays too over the top for me, but I suggest you check out the band he is in, Outworld, which shows his restraint and ability to leave space for the other instruments.
