Funny really - I've just read that Jon savage has published a best of cd 'Meridian' or something - with all his best tunes from 1970 on - think there might be a book also.

I'll probably like Poseidon best, but I have not heard it yet. The next best one for me is Benefit.

I love Trespass, but the production is just HORRIBLE on it, so it can't get my vote.
I voted Atom Heart Mother
closely followed by ITWOP and Trespass
(1970 was a great sign of things to come! Good Poll!)

Among mentioned above albums I hardly could choose between H TO HE and the debut album by Gentle Giant. Just voted for the 2nd one at last...
But among all the 1970 albums (including unmentioned) I would have voted for JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR with no doubt! The next ones would have been Uriah Heep SAULISBURY, DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK and King Crimson LIZARD...

I voted ELP, one of their finest efforts to my humble opnion. VDGG came close. Trespass is a good album but you can hear the band hasn't matured in 1970. There were greater things to come for Genesis during the following years. In ELP's debut everyyhing that's made a ELP a fantastic band were already there. The Atom heart mother track is great but the other Floyd tracks on the album aren't realy worthwhile. The first album of Gentle Giant wasalso not bad |
I agree 100 %!!! Genesis was yet to do great mature stuff and learn to perfomr it with proper skill and confidence: skill and confidence were already present in ELP's and GG's debut albums, respectively, lots of skill and confidence. My vote went for KC's "Poseidon", since it is IMHO the most mature album listed in the poll: I like it even better than their (excellent, crucial) debut, that's how ITCOTCK should have been produced, integrated and mixed.
Regards.

I went with Time and a Word by Yes. I am a major YESman, so I succumbed to the pressure. I really like Atom Heart Mother too though.

All:
Forgive me for my seeming misdating of Trespass and Atom Heart Mother. One of the problems is that, back then, new albums, especially by still-"cult-ish" groups like Genesis and Pink Floyd, were released in the U.K. (and some of Europe) first, and then later in the U.S. My memory (which is pretty good, despite my advancing years...) is that we in the U.S. were not actually able to get Trespass or Atom Heart Mother until early 1971 (unless we wanted to order it as an import).
Not an excuse, but simply an explanation.
Peace.

Genesis - "Trespass" for me with Jethro Tull's "Benefit" coming in second.
