Valid as in "having the right to exist" maybe it is. But please: a band vs an album?! We could also have Sigur Ros vs Close to the Edge..(?!?) Yes vs DT wouldn't be bad (the results would be ) , Images and Words vs Tales wouldn't be bad, but a band vs an album???? |

Not really.. the most awful DT cover album is not MAster of Puppets but Number of The Beast... I love DT 100% when they play DT, when they play other things... well... (I don't like covers anyway..)
But in my view DT would actually make that long boring album that TFTO is a little bit more interesting... About LAbrie, as long as he doesn't sing the absurd lyrics in Anderson's annoying voice, he wouldnt have much problem... I mean, when he had to cover Dickinson (more power) or Hetfield (another completely different kind of voice) he sucked... But Anderson.. all he has to do is pinch his..... |
Micky is right, that's exactly why you buy this album if it ever happens, which it won't, but a must have for any prog fan period. You know, a kind of benchmark to educate the newcomers to progressive rock. They can then see who one of the true masters of the dicipline was and still is.... .......................

I agree. It does come down to taste. But isn't a forum about MUSIC a primary place to discuss the subjectivity that is "taste?" I think when it comes to PA, your "theory" is a given. Or at least should be.

As far as many are concerned, I hate metal. Any type of it.
Definitely the mega-star album Tales pass's DT by far(although I'm clear enough that they realesed some very influential albums).
I agree about that, it's a very odd poll, band vs album??!??

Tales from Topographic Oceans = Tasteful structure and economy (most of the time ) Dream Theater = Too many notes

Well I guess it all comes down to taste. I really love everything Dream Theater's done and can't find a thing wrong with their music but for a lot of other people they dislike a lot of Dream Theater's music, if not all of it. For some it's just LaBrie, I love the man and all of his work but a lot of people seem to find his voice irritating. Again, something that comes down to taste.
However, it was hilarious to hear him when they covered Master of Puppets, and it would be rather interesting to hear how he'd do on TFTO, like you said

bingo... I do... and it would be a DT album I'd actually buy just to hear him mangle it no one doubts their skill... what many doubt are their abilities to ever make an album like that... to take that prodigious skill.. and make good music with it.. rather than merely a display of how well they play their instruments.

though any thread that mentions the might TFTO deserves a bump every now and then
would love to hear DT try to cover that album hahha

I know you're making a joke of it but I actually would like to hear them do that, and I'm sure a lot of DT fanboys (like myself) would. Sure the Master of Puppets cover album kind of sucks but if you listen to "Made In Japan" or "Dark Side" I think they do a great job, never missing a single note.
Even if you don't like them you cannot deny their incredible musicianship, they'd musically be able to pull it off without problem. LaBrie on the other hand.....as much as I love him and think he's perfect for DT....I don't know how he'd do.

Well, these two have one thing in common at least: they both incitre the most stupid reactions here in PA..... |
Oh relax, look at how many views it got. It's all just a bit of recreation and fun. Of course it a dumb poll as most of them are, but it brings a smile to some and that's all that counts. |
Ok. But it's still a waste of bandwidth... Real fun polls can be found elsewhere in this forum...

I think the only real solution to this whole thread is for Dream Theater to do a remake of Tales and then we could compare. Otherwise this whole thread is pretty pointless. An interesting debate though. No vote from me. Dumb poll.
