Proto-prog is a confuse label to put over the beatles and deep Purple. So, excluding these groups, The Moodies are the logical choice.
Bach, Ma, Bros, Déia, Dante.

Careful - by saying Emperor are Proto Prog, you're effectively saying that Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir et al are all Prog...

early Deep Purple... even them... The Concerto for Group and Orchestra was symphonic prog album milestone pure and simple... no proto in that.

 Deep Purple for me

ClapClapClap

You can put DP in Symph any time you want IMHO... It's just that Ivan will have a fit if he sees anything remotely like that, I'm afraid!Wink Can you imagine... A symphonic masterpiece like "Made in Japan"...LOL

Of course it's DP for me too - one of my all-time favourite bands, prog or otherwise!

Soon jefferson Airplane will swipe this doubtLOL
let's just stay above the moral melee

keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Voted Deep Purple for being my favorite in terms of getting the most spins on the CD player.

Closely followed by Moody Blues, Procol Harum and Vanilla Fudge.

The Moody Blues although I'm not sold on them not being under a prog label instead of proto-prog

If the question was the favorite proto prog album I'd choose
Family: Music in a Doll's House.

The Beatles is my favorite band out of these, but maybe not as proto prog? Moody Blues gets my vote for Future Passed, Lost Chord and Threshold.

It's a Beautiful Day's debut is a good and quite important record. Jefferson Airplane's one of my favorite psychedelia bands.

There is five bands I haven't heard yet.
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
