Yeah the improvment with vib cancelling is HUGE!!!

Did you put your CD and turntable horizontal in the two dimensions, using a plumb level and steel or hard wood pieces?!! free but essential!!

I've listen to a big Stax headphones (with its tube prepre) for the first time of my life this week end.
(The whole costs about 2500/3000€).

We listened the big CD setup mentionned above (Teac VRDS20 + Brinkmann Zenith III) through a Counterpoint SA5000 preamp.

Amazing how it goes further in low, high and quickeness than speakers+sub...

A more cerebral styte of listening.

"My goal's beyond" by Mc Laughlin was amazing through the headphones, "The end of an ear" by Wyatt was quite impressive also.

An audiophile friend of us, which is also a sound recorder for "France2" TV, -so headphones is its working tool- listened to this headphones and was crying...

Ah theory theory and theory...sound is so complex it can not be explained by theory, the only think that counts is what you hear

The very fact that an ADC for CDs cannot produce frequencies above 22.1 kHz means that it's impossible for it to produce anything even slightly resembling a sawtooth or square wave at 15kHz. I can't be bothered to think the maths through precisely at 4.30am, but it might even be that 11.05kHz is the very highest frequency that a square wave could be output for, bearing in mind the sharp low pass filter applied before DAC and after ADC. For that reason looking using a spectral analyser is entirely useless if you look above 22.1kHz while the signal is still digital, because that nonsense will not be a part of the signal at all when it reaches the speakers, even if one's ears could hear it.

As a metal fan I choose the Square, of course. It's also the most interesting waveform from a mathematical standpoint.

Unfortunately, as I explained above, at high frequencies our ear cannot tell them apart.

Not only that; at high frequencies they will become literally the same in a digital system.

Could you remind us (in detail) of that, Mike?

I wonder what else I said according to your memory.

I think it's actually a misinterpretation of what I said. I may be wrong about that, though.

As will analogue systems always have flaws relative to digital ones. I read an article somewhere about people who hear degradation of records after five or so plays. It probably wasn't true, but it's interesting nonetheless.

You'd be amazed at how much recordists try and make their recordings of orchestras sound like we expect recordings to sound, rather than how the actual orchestra sounds when you hear them live.

If you want GOOD quality for a cheap price...get a VINYL player it can outbeat CD players on over 3 times the price

See my first post. Vinyl is not better than CD in real life. I'll happily accept any slight differences between the original master and the CD if I in return get the luxury of not having to handle vinyl discs with all their mechanical shortcomings.

This is how I listen to music:

  1. Turn the computer on.
  2. Turn the hifi system on.
  3. Start Winamp.
  4. Select Album from the media library.
  5. Go.

BLASPHEMY!

No, just reality. I ripped all my CDs to the computer in 192kbps WMA ... and soon I'll change that to WMA Lossless for my favorite albums. Combined with the right soundcard (Creative X-Fi) this results in a perfect copy of the CD.
