Master. Its so brilliantly done and was the last to feature the great Cliff. The album was not only heavy as hell, but incredibly well put together musically and they were nearly as screachy as on the first two also great albums.
I really dig the band, even their "sell out" albums. St. Anger wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. It was pretty amazing they even put anything out. The album is aggressive as hell, the riffs are still sweet, James' voice is still ass whooping, and Lars's drumming still rocks even with the overload of typical layer upon layer of compression Bob Rock production. I'm greatly looking forward to the new one.
1. Master of Puppets 2. Load 3. ...And Justice for All 4. Ride the Lightning 5. Kill 'Em All 6. St. Anger 7. Black Album 8. ReLoad

The albums I can actually stand are :
-And Justice for All
-Ride the Lightning
-Kill 'Em All
-Master of Puppets
In that order, and I dislike everything besides those 4.

Bump.
I used to be a big Metallica fan. I think that my vote will be for Master of Puppets. My fandom goes back to the Ride the Lightning days. My neighbor was jamming Metallica shortly after that album came out. At that point, I had not heard of Metallica. I ended up ordering Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning records from an ad in a Heavy Metal magazine (I don't recall which one) and being totally blown away by this amazing band. I could have easily as voted for Ride the Lightning, and Justice for All, or The Black Album. I even like St. Anger, although I admit it lacks that certain something that their other albums have.

I don't like Kill 'em all very much.
Also St. Anger (apart from the amazing title track and maybe Invisible kid) failed to impress me.
Ditto for Load and Reload...the releases following the "Black album", which is my favourite, have definitely let me down.
One slight step below the 1991 album, I rate Ride the lightning and ...And justice for all, which contain wonderful tracks but maybe lack the maturity they came to master with the omonimous album.
Master of Puppets comes yet another step below

My fav is The Black Album, although the previous albums are all very good, specially Master Of Puppets. I also like Load very much. They changed their style but IMO the songwriting is very good. Re-Load is OK but weaker than Load. St Anger is rather bad.

Kill'em All
Raw energy - fast and angry. Hetfield's vocal sucks. Overall good and interesting debut, but nothing special, it just can't grab me.
Ride The Lightning
Now we're talking. Thrash masterpiece. Everything is in the right place, album doesn't drag. Riffs are powerful, intricate and catchy, solid sound, technique is great also. My fav.
Master Of Puppets
I've never understood what's so great and groundbreaking about this album. Decent thrash. The first tracks are awesome, but then it slows down and only at the end we have great tracks. It's too fillish to my ears.
...And Justice For All
As thrashiest as it gets, but it's sheer technique. There's no room for soul here, except for masterpiece such as One and few other great tracks. All in all, superb at virtuosity and decent at emotions.
Metallica
It's been sooo long since I've heard it (maybe I should check it again?)...I don't even remember is it really that bad, as I thought of it back then. Well, I don't like it. It just doesn't appeal to me.
Load
Same as above
Reload
Same as above
St. Anger
Actually I refuse to listen to it. I've heard St.Anger, Frantic an couple of other songs on radio and deeply disliked it.

MoP Orion is incredible. It's what I was raised on on middle school. And by the way, who the hell voted for St. Anger?! Hope it was a joke...

Kill 'Em All - 4.5/5 (Rough at the edges, but amazing).
Ride The Lightning - 4.75/5 (Nearly perfect, but "Creeping Death" is too long and repetitive).
Master of Puppets - 4.9/5 (I just don't like "The Thing That Should Not Be")
...And Justice For All - 4.6666/5 (Gets a bit noodly - I could care less about hearing Jason Useless).
Metallica - 4.25/5 (No more adventurous meanderings, but very slick, and a colossal sound).
Load - 1/5 (tripe)
ReLoad - 0/5 (why did I waste my money)
St. Anger - 1/5 (I almost like bits of it - but very dull overall).

Yes, it's true ... but it has to be with the distortion. Really I can not hear so much the bass on metal bands. But "... And Justice For All" has an excellent sound and ACCURACY, very well recorded. |
Lars, James and Kirk went on record to say that they regularly turned Jason down or tuned him out on "AJFA". That's why no one can hear him.
My fave is MASTER OF PUPPETS, followed by RIDE THE LIGHTNING and ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. I also like ST. SNGER, although it's messy as hell.
