It's better than Load or Reload, but still very samey and lacking in experimentation: It seems like a lazy album to me, with no real passion - which is why I don't like it.
And since my brother gave me the DVD of "The Making of", I have much less respect for the band than I did after I heard they were joining the RIAA in their clampdown of music "pirates" - and that takes some doing.
They were amazing before "Load".

It's a decent album in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of the band, but I wanted to check this record out as so many people got pissed about it. I like the unconvential drum sound solution.

The St Anger album was a total disappointment for me. Kirk Hammet isn't the best guitarist in heavy metal, but I surely missed his solos here. And Hetfield's vocals are worse than on any previous albums. ANGER indeed but not the case to mess up his vocals. I don't know what kind of drums Ulrich was playing but they have a pretty awful sound. There are some catchy riffs and some good ideas but they kinda get lost along the way.
I do like two songs though that, in my humble opinion, stand up from the rest: Unnamed Feeling and Invisible Kid.

I liked it when I bought it but now it's gathering dust. No guitar solos and those awful drums.

You would too if all your fans were ready to kill you for it. They need the popularity more than sticking by their album.

Metallica had long since ceased to matter in any way when St. Anger came out.

I somehow hate it, but still love it.
Invisible kid is great! And The Unnamed Feeling, and Frantic and St. Anger, and other..
It is clearly same old Metallica, listen macrostructure! And it's also different. Zeuhl :) But I think album deserve little high voices - drums: ride, for example. Or crazy woman screaming (singing). It's almost boring, underground (also like they were playing underground), but still electonic. But i think that is one of the points in that album. It's sovereign. Although, i find something good on everything. But also something bad. In conclusion, i like it, it's better than most music in the radio, but it's not best of metallica or best for me. 2,8 stars

I reallly like the trashy sound of this album. It's one of my favorites
from Metallica, because it's not some stupid snobby metal kind of
album. It's straight forward junking around with heavy riffs and
garbage drums. That's WHY it's good!
And I agree with those in this thread who have said "bands who try
something new get dissed". It's all too true. Sorry folks, Metallica is
not going to make the same album over and over. If you want old
Metallica, LISTEN to old Metallica...

The bashing is the only thing to expect when an iconic band releases a mediocre(not bad) album, or when an iconic band tries something new.

following their earlier masterpieces i was disappointed with "load" and "reload", as were many others, which may have prompted Metallica to go down the "thrash metal" road which i didn't like and i felt was a mistake, but "St.Anger" was a successful album so good luck to them, at least i can still listen to "..and justice for all", one of my all time top fave albums! .

I had it for a while but the production was so wretched that it's hard to judge how good the album was. I'm not their hugest fan, but love the first few albums, but it was easy to see how inferior it was to their best work. And yes, what the hell was that godawful drum sound about?? Apparently Megadeth's album around the same time, 'The System Has Failed', was not much better either...

IT SEEMS THE 'ANGER' HAS NOT FADED AWAY YET, EVEN AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS OF POSTING THIS THREAD...
I FINALLY REALISE THAT THE ALBUM HAS THE RIGHT TITLE AS IT CREATES REAL ANGER TO PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO IT

I used to be a HUGE Met fan. I even liked "Load" and "ReLoad".
"St. Anger" is the first truly dishonest album they ever did. It's supposed to be angry, but it all sounds forced. The songs are their least inventive ever. ("Some Kind Of Monster" has, what, ONE CHORD?)
And drums are not supposed to go CLANG. Unless you're Einsturzende Neubauten.
It is time for them to call it quits and go back to counting their money.
