you'll be hard-pressed to find any 14 year olds that like prog...wait till you're 15 or 16, and they'll show up more...but not much more. I still only have one friend who's really into prog, but only because of me. THen I know some others that are mildly into it, but no Van der Graaf Generator fans...

Wow, I knew there many young people here, but I had no idea there were so many 15/16 year olds interested in prog. I was thinking more of 18/19 year olds when I saw youth. Good job with the band performance, Ty1020.

For an indication of the vitality of prog among young people today,
look no further than my avatar. It's a picture of my band (I'm on the
left ) performing Porcupine Tree's
Blackest Eyes at our school's last Lunchapalooza (our semi-annual rock
show). The song was well-received and I know a lot of people who
downloaded it and got into Porcupine Tree as a result, in addition to
the droves of people who were already familiar with the band and
enjoyed it for that reason.

Im 16 and the only friends I know that listen to prog are because I
introduced them to Dream Theater or Mago de Oz. But still they don't
know anything about the 70s prog scene nor have they listened to
anything prg besides prog metal.

so the general opinion, is that the density of proglovers (oh i love that!) varies from general area to area. but mainly it seems their are still quite few young proggers.

I know what you mean... and the answer is yes. The majority of todays youth would rather listen to mindless apes(blink182, new found glory, etc etc) strum away power chords and sing like they are holding their noses, than listen to anything with any sort of complication at all. This girl I know(17 at the time) told me that she would rather listen to simple music like blink182 than anything with guitar solos. It's rather disgusting.

I resent that. I'm 16 and I actually don't know anyone who actively
listens to the radio. I have quite a few prog loving friends, and the
rest of the people I know all listen to other relatively unknown music.
We're not all idiots, you know .

Some people don't know who Pink Floyd are? That's interesting. When I
wear my Cream reunion tour shirt I thought it was strange that only about
10% of the people in college knew who Cream was.
As for the topic of the thread, I find it very hard to find anyone interested
in prog unless it's Dream Theater and some prog metal bands. One of my
really good friends is a big Dream Theater/Tool fan that I've recently
introduced into King Crimson and Yes. He doesn't like it much but I'm
hoping it will grow on him. He also recently discovered the Mars Volta
and is now a big fan. Other than that I don't know anyone who has even
heard of bands such as Gentle Giant or VDGG.

music doesnt have to be prog to be good, you know. there are many
talented musicians who dont choose to play extremely complex songs or
30 minute epics. a con ive notcied that applies to most proggers is
that they are closed minded to anything that isnt prog.

You are absolutley right, their are good bands that are not prog; I can
count them with one hand.
-Led Zeppelin
-Allman Brothers
-Guess Who
-White Stripes
-Smashing Pumpkins
(Notice how I did not say Nirvana...)

I am 16 and i love prog, a few of my metalhead friends like some prog-metal and the bassist in the band i play in likes Rush(his favorite band), Yes, Dream Theater, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd. so I guess I know some people my age into prog, but I do agree on the whole its very rare to meet someone into prog.

If anyone knows where I can get a copy of some Flute and Voice (Indo-Prog/Raga Rock) albums please PM me! Many thanks!

i told someone that was wearing a dark side of the moon t shirt
that pink floyd is prog, and he said that "pink floyd is like acdc,
theyre rock! falloutboy and modest mouse are prog!"
at first i laughed because i thought he was kidding, but he was totally serious.... heh kids these days right?

I'm 16, but I don't know anybody my age outside of the internet that
likes prog. I know people who like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd,
Porcupine Tree, Rush, and Dream Theater, for example, but when I use
the term "progressive rock," they have no idea what I'm talking about.

I'm a girl. I like prog. I understand prog. And I'm very intelligent and listen to a lot of music!Yes, I'm breaking the gender barrier!
Honestly though, there doesn't seem to be any more 15 year old girls on this site, does there? That must mean something about the way the popularity of music has intensified its crappiness and made mainstream artists sell out, and my generation (or any other generation, for that matter) become more obsessed with popularity and less concerned with actual music. As you can tell, I hate society. |
Society isn't generally too forgiving for a fifteen year old into prog (or anything else unusual, for that matter) - probably even less for girls. The good news is as other people get older they become more accepting, and as you become older you can find more nice & accepting people (and maybe even some into prog )

I recently came across a 16 year old on the Internet who likes VdGG and
Henry Cow, so there are a few of you. Why is it that so few girls
like prog then Peace Frog? A lot of teenage girls Nightwish and
Evanescence (not prog), maybe it's because they are have female singers?

Not everyone likes Pink Floyd... I do, but I know lots who don't.
It does tend to be a mans music, I don't understand why more women aren't into it.
