19 here...

I entered prog some years ago by listening to metallica's S&M....
While i certainly like prog-metal i'd always choose symphonic rock over prog-metal...

I like prog being not mainstream. If so, quality would be outrun by quantity.

It's sad to see people my age with such a pessimistic view of our peers. You listen to prog, I listen to prog, many of my friends listen to prog... the problem isn't that today's youth doesn't want to listen to prog, most people just haven't even heard of it. Of course, there will always be some people who don't like it, but in general, everyone I've introduced to prog has received it really well and wanted to hear more. Most people at my school listen to at least some interesting and/or complex music anyways, so prog is usually just what they're looking for.

I'm 18. But I have been into prog since junior high. It wasnt until recently that I found this site. As for my musical leanings, I consider myself a Syd Barrett fan primarily before my more progressive tastes.

I'd say you're right and wrong. I'm 16 and I originally got into prog through prog metal, but now I don't even listen to it anymore. It's a good way for young people to discover prog, but once they do, I think most of the branch out into the other sub-genres like I did. Right now, I'm really loving post-rock as I continue to catch up on all the great symphonic prog from the 70's I missed out on.

Laugh! Perhaps it gives prog-metal hope.

so you say we people under 20 (I'm 17 by the way) should be directly associated as listening to prog metal? ...damn... I really like Floyd )I was convinced Floyd was not really prog, but since there are a great many fans of Floyd around, I'll cross those formalities)... and Genesis... but wait, only Gabriel's Genesis...

hey, seems there's a great number of proggers under 20! ja...well, I'm just a newbie, but there are people of 14 years old!jaja I am amazed, at my 14 I could bearly write in english...

evidently I haven't got any better at that!...

I recently turned 52 & have been a prog fan for well over 35 years. I saw YES & ELP way back in the early 70s. I saw Genesis in 1986 (Invisible Touch Tour).

Prog continues to be my genre of choice, although I will admit that I'm not very up-to-date with a lot of the newer stuff. That's part of the reason why I'm here.

I enjoy Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Glass Hammer & Transatlantic & am always looking for recommendations. I've heard a lot about Mars Volta here & on other forums & plan to check them out.

I think you're right.

Often, but not always. Personally I favour anything bizarre, and got into prog via sympho.  I don't much care for prog metal except for the most challenging and unusual exponents of the genre.

I'm 24. I started listening to heavy metal etc. about 12 years ago

In that time Metallica and Maiden were the top in Greece.

Then I moved to DT etc. so I would say I first listened to prog metal

I have 'discovered' prog rock fairly recently, sth like 3 or 4 years ago

I am 46, and it is an excellent age to really know what you are talking about when it comes to prog. I grew up with music, starting with Beatles in the 60's, moving to rock, and glam in the early 70's, and then to prog, via Genesis, Floyd and Yes.

I still like most music genres, not so much rap/hip-hop though... This site has really revitalized my music interest in general and prog specifically. I am currently deep in an Ayreon-mode!
