Lifeson most definitely, has some of the best feeling and tone of any guitarist I've ever heard. And besides, where do you think Petrucci got most of his inspiration?

Lerxst takes the proverbial cake! And he's probably much funnier than Petrucci!

Alex can write riffs, whereas Petrucci just shreds endlessly. Therefore, Alex has my vote.

Lifeson is far more emotional than Petrucci. | | |
In What field, soloing slower? Petrucci is by far more technical, more emotional, more trained and MUCH MUCH more musical. Sorry, but Lifeson is the low man in Rush. | | | Since when is the emotional content of a guitarist determined by how fast he can play...? Petrucci is definitely faster but really how much scales can you take... it seems like even Petrucci himself doesn't know where to go if Octavarium is any indication of his guitarist headspace... still a good guitarist though but no Lifeson... techinicality is only half the battle...

This is a really hard choice because I'm a big Rush fan, but I also
like Dream Theater equally. I have decided to go with John Petrucci
though, just on the sheer fact that he's more technically brilliant
than Lifeson. However, Lifeson has written many more tuneful guitar
melodies than John Petrucci has so.... still a difficult choice.

yeah, it's quite easy to be the low man in Rush, but keep in mind Rush's low man is better than many band's high man.

^I absolytely agree with Tlossy. Lifeson is great, but Petrucci is more technical, faster, and complicated... plus I'm a DT fanboy

I really love both of these guitarists. John Petrucci is a masterful player, and i'm a Dream Theater fanboy, so it's hard to not vote for him. At the same time i really love alot of the stuff that Alex Lifeson has done. Lifeson's tone is actually one of my favorite guitar tones of the seventies. Lifeson is a brilliant melodic player with catchy playing too. I did vote for Petrucci though, he's a guitarist that has perfect technique, a great variety of tones, and brilliant songwriting ability.

John Petrucci no doubt! Better, faster, and has more feeling to it.

Interesting... Petrucci is defintely technically more consistent however Lifeson definetly has the edge over Petrucci in terms of songwriting abilities on the guitar. Lifeson has a more original approach with a greater sense of melody, emotion and atmosphere over Petrucci's soaring scales and crunchy riffs. And despite the fact that Petrucci is faster and tighter than Lifeson, I prefer Lifeson's solos as they are more creative, emotional and just pure spontaneous. I love both their work however...
